Sakhrani Distillery
About the distillery
Sakhrani is a women-led whisky house in Yanbaru in northern Okinawa, where subtropical rainforest, ultra-soft water from Ogimi Village, and a special focus on Japanese wood finishes set the direction. The house works with three expressions, all bottled at 47% and without chill filtration or added color. It’s a small, place-based project with a clear idea: whisky should reflect both the island, the climate, and the people behind it.
History
Two women, one island
Sakhrani was created out of a shared belief that Okinawa has something special to offer the whisky world. Sabrina Sakhrani had lived on the island for 27 years, while Ayako Ikehara comes from Yanbaru and is the fifth generation in a distillery family. Together, they chose to build a whisky brand that would be both personal and rooted in place.
A family legacy and a conscious choice
Ayako Ikehara is described as having grown up in one of Okinawa’s respected distillery families, with a father who believed the whisky could become world-class right here. Sabrina Sakhrani came to Okinawa from the outside after years in, among other places, Rome, London, Tokyo, and Hong Kong, and she made the island her home. The house thus highlights both heritage and selection as driving forces behind the project.
Yanbaru as the framework for the whisky
Distillation and maturation are tied to Yanbaru in northern Okinawa, a UNESCO World Heritage area with subtropical rainforest. Here the water comes from Ogimi Village, and the warm, humid climate as well as the salty sea air are described as essential to the whisky’s development.
Ingredients and production
Sakhrani works with a proprietary blend composed of whisky from Scotland’s Highlands, Speyside, and Lowlands. The blend is created specifically to mature in Yanbaru’s subtropical climate, where warm, humid air and the salt-tinged sea breeze cause wood and spirit to interact differently than in a cooler environment. The house also emphasizes that the whisky is built on ultra-soft water from Ogimi Village, which is taken directly to the distillery.
Technically, the expression is deliberately kept natural: the whisky is not colored and not chill-filtered. This gives a more undisturbed texture and allows the blend, the water, and the maturation environment to stand out clearly. The craftsmanship is described as work driven by experience and instinct, where Ayako Ikehara’s blending carries the tradition of five generations. At the same time, there is a strong emphasis on balance, because the bottlings are designed to deliver depth and structure without losing elegance.
Maturation and cask types
Maturation is at the center of Sakhrani’s style. Each expression is finished on a rare Japanese tree species: Kuri in chestnut wood, Mizunara in Japanese oak, and Sakura in cherry blossom wood. The tree species are used not only as a finish, but as an active part of the identity—where they contribute, respectively, with warm, nutty depth, a spicy and incense-like resonance, and a more floral, lighter expression.
Yanbaru’s subtropical climate is part of the maturation, and the house describes how warmth, humidity, and time shape the whisky’s final character. It’s a maturation focused on natural development rather than heavy-handed interventions, and all three releases are bottled at 47% to preserve balance and length.
Whiskies
The current portfolio consists of three expressions that together make up The Sakhrani Trilogy. Kuri Edition is the warmest and most nut-driven, Mizunara Edition the deepest and most meditative, while Sakura Edition is the most elegant and floral. Common to all of them is 47% alcohol, non-chill filtration, and no added color.
The range is curated rather than broad—and that’s the point: each bottle should represent a specific side of Yanbaru and a specific wood finish. This is a cohesive set of expressions, where wood, climate, and the blend work in the same direction, but with clear differences in character and intensity.

Style and tasting profile of the whiskies
In terms of flavor, Sakhrani moves between three distinct tracks. Kuri Edition leans toward peach, caramel, nutmeg, toffee, and roasted nut, with a long, warm finish. Mizunara Edition goes in a darker, more contemplative direction with warm spice, incense, sandalwood, dried fruit, coconut, and a resinous finish. Sakura Edition is lighter and more blooming, with cherry blossom, pomegranate, vanilla, soft fruit, and a clean, floral finish. Together, they create a portrait of a whisky profile where fruit, spice, wood, and floral notes are held in fine balance.
Visit the distillery
The material points primarily to online sales and direct contact rather than an actual visitor center. The three expressions can be purchased online, and early access, gift wrapping, and personalization for selected bottles are offered. WhatsApp contact and trade enquiries are also mentioned, but no public tours, tastings, opening hours, or booking process are described as a visitor experience for the public.
Philosophy and craftsmanship
Sakhrani’s philosophy is built on heritage, nature, and control over the detail. The house highlights the distillation knowledge of five generations, a protected water source, rare wood finishes, and a natural style without color or chill filtration. In addition, Okinawa’s climate is central as an active tool in maturation, and 47% ABV is used deliberately to provide balance between depth, structure, and elegance. Part of the value foundation also includes giving back to Ogimi Village and supporting the local community that has shaped the whisky’s identity.
Sustainability
Whiskies rest in sustainably harvested Mizunara, Sakura and Kuri wood.
Work is done with pristine water from Ogimi Village in Yanbaru.
A portion of each sold bottle supports Ogimi’s elders and helps preserve traditions and local communities.
