History

  • OOR: OMAR means amber in Gaelic, and the brand is created around Nantou Distillery in Taiwan. The production facility is surrounded by mountains and high-quality freshwater, which according to the website makes the area particularly suited for whisky production and maturation.

  • Early milestones: Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor (TTL) launched the first single malt bottled at cask strength in October 2013 and has since participated in and won numerous international competitions (ISC, SFWSC, MMA, IWSC, WWA, CMB) – often recognized for tropical fruit notes and for having carried Taiwan onto the global whisky stage.

  • Award-winners and recognition: OMAR's sherry cask malt has won Daily Dram Best Sherried Whisky in MMA, Supreme Winner, Best Natural Casks and Grand Gold Medal in CMB Spirits Selection. Their bourbon cask has won Best Natural Casks among the MMA prizes, and the brand's claim of a unique Taiwanese terroir and craftsmanship has helped distinguish OMAR from Scottish whisky.

  • Production philosophy and history: TTL focuses on non-chill filtration and no caramel coloring to reflect local terroir and natural color. The area is also noted as part of Taiwan's position as one of the leading whisky regions in the world. In the 1980s, the company sent skilled craftsmen to Scotland to learn whisky-making techniques and later bring these to Taiwan.

  • Development and portfolio: From 2013-2017 OMAR expanded its range to core range (46% ABV), finish whiskies in various fruit barrels (lychee, plum, osmanthus, etc.), cask strength variants and special editions such as Harvest Series and government inauguration-based editions. In addition, several local Taiwanese grape varieties (e.g., Muscat) and local fruit wine barrels are used to provide unique finishes.

  • Geography and identity: OMAR roots its identity in Nantou, Taiwan, and describes how the climate and environment contribute to maturity and flavor development, and how fresh fruit and local ingredients are integrated into different single malt releases.

Production / Manufacturing

  • General approach: OMAR follows a traditional Scottish malt whisky process in Nantou with malting, fermentation and double distillation in copper stills. The new make spirit is watered down for maturation in oak casks and aged in the Taiwanese climate, where maturation proceeds faster than in Scotland.

  • Effect of climate and technique: According to the website, summers are hot and winters are not very cold, which speeds up maturation; the stated angel share is around 6-7% annually. There is a clear commitment to at least 3 years of maturation and to maintaining conditions without the addition of colorants or caramel coloring.

  • Key elements and processes: malt, water and oak cask are three key elements; yeast converts the wort into alcohol and flavor, and the aroma and flavor develop through aging in different cask types (bourbon, sherry, virgin oak, fruit wines, etc.). 100% English two-row barley and German mash tun as well as four copper stills are used in Nantou.

  • Cask and finish strategies: beyond the classic cask types (bourbon and sherry), OMAR explores finishes in fruit-based and locally produced casks (lychee, plum, osmanthus wine barrel, muscat brandy oak, orange brandy, etc.). Blends and single-cask releases are also produced, where some cask-finished releases are labeled as single cask / cask strength.

  • Non-chill filtration and coloring: all OMAR single malts are non-chill filtered and without caramel coloring to preserve aroma and complexity.

  • Experience production: guidelines for distillation equipment, mashing, fermentation and aging emphasize a focus on craftsmanship, attention to detail and control of the cask's influence on color and flavor.

Products / Whisky Series

  • Core Range: OMAR Single Malt Whisky 46% ABV; types include Bourbon Type, Sherry Type and Peated Type.

  • Liqueur Finish: finishes in various fruit wine barrels to capture local Taiwanese fruit elements (Lychee, Plum, Black Queen Wine, Orange Brandy, etc.).

  • Cask Strength: releases selected from hundreds of casks; different cask types such as Bourbon Cask, Sherry Cask, Virgin Oak, and variants like Peated Malt and other special editions.

  • Special Edition: rare and historic bottles, often in limited quantities and for special events (e.g., 15th/16th Presidential inauguration, PX Solera Sherry, IPA cask and other special names).

  • Harvest Series: a series of vintage editions with the Harvest theme, where No. 1 to No. 6 highlight local fruits and unique cask finishes (e.g., Lychee Barrel, Osmanthus, Muscat, Passionsfruit, PX Sherry, etc.). No. 6 concludes the Harvest Series and includes finishes such as Passion Fruit Liqueur and PX Sherry.

  • Peat and special cask types: OMAR also produces a single malt “Peated Type” and has releases with various finishes such as Orange Brandy, Lychee, Plum, Muscat, Osmanthus, and other combinations.

  • Notes and style: tasting notes are described broadly with tropical fruits (mango, pineapple, lychee), floral notes (ylang-ylang, jasmine, osmanthus), honey, caramel, vanilla, toffee, burnt sugar, wood/oak, and undertones of smoke and spices in the peat editions. The handling of the wort and the cask provides layering from top to bottom with complex aromas and long, rich aftertastes.

Visiting / Experiences

  • Tours and experiences: Nantou Distillery offers tours on weekends, where visitors can learn about the traditions and history behind OMAR and Nantou Winery, as well as sample whisky in their tasting space. The price for a single sample can be NT 100 per glass (20 ml).

  • Location and opening hours: No. 82, Dongshan Rd., Nantou City, Nantou County 540, Taiwan. Opening hours 8:30-17:00, every day except Chinese New Year Eve.

  • Walking area and sustainability: the facility highlights a habitat with ducks, fish and plants around the storage tanks and presents this as part of sustainability in production and the visitor experience.

Philosophy

  • Terroir and identity: OMAR focuses on conveying (amber heart, Taiwan spirit) and recreating local scents and flavors through harvest from Nantou. They highlight tropical Taiwanese fruits as a hallmark of their whisky and strive to offer a tasting experience that is different from Scottish whisky, seen through Taiwan's climate and culture.

  • No additives: non-chill filtration and no caramel coloring to preserve natural color and aroma in the whisky. The brand emphasizes craftsmanship, precision and the inclusion of local fruits and wines in the finish process as part of local identity.

  • Education and heritage: OMAR notes that the South Nantou (SASS) distillery has a history dating back to the 1980s, where Scottish training and local innovations worked together to develop Taiwan's whisky production and culture, and describes how they work closely with local coopers and technicians to preserve professionalism and quality.
