History
Alberta Distillers Limited was founded in Calgary, Alberta, and is described as the oldest distillery in Western Canada. Since day one they have been dedicated to being Honest Canadian Craft and have been globally recognized for quality and craftsmanship since 1946. According to the company's historical descriptions, Alberta Distillers was founded by two industry people, Frank McMahon and Max Bell, together with master distiller George Reifel, and quickly became known as one of Western Canada's first distilleries. They are among the few who have managed to build a significant legacy around local ingredients and Canadian craftsmanship. The anchor of the story is the focus on locally grown ingredients and Rocky Mountain glacial water — pillars in their identity and product development. The distillery was presented as an important chapter in Canada's spirits progression and was recognized as Distillery of the Decade at the Canadian Whisky Awards in 2020. Their approach is built on three core values: Community, Craft, and Nature.
Production / Manufacturing
Production and manufacturing at Alberta Distillers follow a detailed and controlled process that emphasizes regional agriculture and natural resources. They source grain from Canadian prairie farms in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, contributing to the special relationship between climate and crops that yields a more robust and hard-working rye blend. A central part of their approach is the use of 100% unmalted Canadian prairie rye and their own enzymatic cascades to convert starches into sugars during fermentation.
The process consists of seven steps: preparation, mashing, fermentation, distillation (with options for continuous, batch, or kettle distillation), barreling and aging at elevations above 3,000 feet, spread across 23 warehouses and up to 500,000 barrels. The water comes from glacier-fed sources in the Rocky Mountains, which together with grain and a unique enzyme blend gives spirits with distinctive prairie flavors.
The distillery primarily ages in new charred oak barrels as well as previously used bourbon barrels, and their Canadian whisky master blends are made as a mix of used and new barrels from sustainable sources. They also have a practice of reusing the byproduct (stillage) as animal feed, reflecting a circular approach. Their sustainability work is formalized through ISO 14001 and includes extensive energy and water-saving initiatives as well as 100% renewable electricity via certificates. Part of their sustainability focus is Habitat Friendly Winter Wheat, where at least 30% of winter wheat comes from farms that protect breeding waterfowl and are supported by various environmental labeling and agricultural organizations.
Products / Whisky Series
Alberta Distillers produces several whisky products, with particular emphasis on their 100% rye-based Alberta Premium series. Among them are:

-
Alberta Premium Golden Rye 9 YO: 9-year rye, distilled from locally grown 100% rye; flavor notes include caramel, leather and a coconut note in the aroma; taste of raisins and molasses; finish sweet and spicy.
-
Alberta Premium Batch 10 Legacy Reserve: 10 whiskies in 1 glass with hand-selected aged rye from the best of a decade; described as a sipping experience that takes you through time. Notes include amber color, aroma of dark chocolate and dried plums, warm pear and banana; taste of espresso and dark chocolate with hints of banana and toffee; finish smooth and creamy.
These products highlight the grain's origin in the Prairies, glacier water and the house's own enzyme blend as key factors in flavor development. The sustainability and local engagement goals are also clearly present in the Whisky Series through references to grain sources and aged barrels.

Philosophy
Alberta Distillers describes itself as bearing a heritage of Honest Canadian Craft with a focus on local production, high quality, and sustainability. Their approach centers around the use of prairie grains and glacial water, combined with slow, careful craftsmanship and sometimes the use of existing casks to achieve complex and complementary flavor profiles. Their bold statements include a long-term commitment to community and agriculture, combined with strict quality controls and environmental considerations – for example ISO 14001 certification, use of high-efficiency natural gas boilers, and their entire strategy for water and energy conservation as well as reuse of byproducts.
