History
Bruichladdich Distillery is an Islay distillery, which was revived in 2001. Since then their vision has been to create the world's most thought-provoking spirits, with a strong focus on raw ingredients and on the farming community surrounding agriculture. Terroir is considered essential, and they go to extreme lengths to create whisky with distinctive flavor and provenance. The distillery describes itself as progressive Hebridean distillers since 1881 and is known for our whisky not being peat-smoked in all series, but also for being 100% Scottish barley and connected to Islay. In 2020 Bruichladdich became the first Scottish whisky distillery in the world to receive B Corp certification and meet the highest standards for social and environmental sustainability; each year they publish their impact.

Production / Manufacturing
Bruichladdich's approach is infused with terroir and the role of farming. Since the revival in 2001 they have focused on the raw material and the farming community as the heart of the process. Whisky is produced with long aging and complete transparency; it is 100% Scottish barley, slow fermentation in wooden washbacks and trickle distillation through tall, slender-necked stills. They use Islay's spring water and age the whisky without cold filtration and without colouring. Bruichladdich emphasizes that their journey is a connection between land and glass, and that whisky and farming are mutually intertwined. From the content it also appears that the production includes Bruichladdich (unpeated), Port Charlotte (heavily peated) and Octomore (super-heavily peated), as well as X4+18 Edition 01 as an example of innovation and patience. Their commitment to sustainability is highlighted through projects like Regeneration, Biodynamic and Ternary, as well as 20 local farmers on Islay and 100% Scottish barley. They also claim commitment to quality and community by storing the stocks with high provenance and by being uncoloured and un-coloured throughout the chain – from soil to glass – and by producing with Islay spring water. Bruichladdich also emphasizes how whisky and farming are connected and can be a force for positive change.

Products / Whisky-series

Bruichladdich unpeated (The Classic Laddie)

Flagship unpeated Islay single malt, illustrating the pure barley-forward character and terroir without smoke. If you want to understand that class of Bruichladdich's approach, this is the place.

Port Charlotte (heavily peated)

The lineup of heavily peated single malts, known for a distinctly dry peat and barbecue smoke. These whiskies express Islay's characteristic smoke and complexity.

Octomore (super-heavily peated)

Expressions that push smoke and intensity to the extreme; labelled as The Impossible Equation, where terroir, cask management and levels of peat are explored to give unique characters.

X4+18 Edition 01

First of four in a series, distilled four times and aged on Islay for 18 years. It has a higher ABV (63.5%) and a tasting notes set that opens with muscovado sugar, honeyed pastry, dried apricots and mango, anchored by oak with long maturation.

Islay Barley 2014, Organic Barley 2012, Bere Barley 2013

Islay Barley 2014 – fully traceable with high provenance, barley harvested from 8 local farms around Bruichladdich and matured in mixed casks (bourbon, sherry and wine casks) with notes of grain, apricot and grass.
Organic Barley 2012 – barley grown organically and 100% Scottish barley; matured on Islay with notes of creamy fudge, honey, citrus and spice; yielding a clean, childhood-street-like body.
Bere Barley 2013 – heritage malt barley from the Bere variety; matured in first-fill bourbon casks and second-fill Pauillac wine casks, which gives malted grain notes blended with green fruit and light spice.

Biodynamic and Cask-Exploration Projects
The Biodynamic Project, The Regeneration Project and The Ternary Project show Bruichladdich's interest in soil, sustainability and experimentation. The production mentions 100% Scottish barley and collaboration with 20 local farmers on Islay to reduce transport and support the land. Their projects show how land and whisky are connected and can be used as a force for improving the environment and local communities.

Philosophy
Bruichladdich describes itself as a company not bound by tradition, but proud of tradition. They produce not only whisky, but strive for a strong connection between the raw material, farming and the community. In 2020 they achieved B Corp certification and publish their impact annually, demonstrating a commitment to social and environmental responsibility. They want terroir to matter and believe that whisky can be a force for positive change by reuniting land, local communities and the dram. Bruichladdich emphasizes that all their whisky comes from 100% Scottish barley and that production takes place on Islay, without colouring and without cold filtration, to preserve the raw material's character and traceable provenance.
