Show on map: Amrut — farm borewell water

In an interview, Amrut managing director Rakshit Jagdale describes using borewell water from the company's farm about seven kilometres from its distillery for whisky production in Bengaluru.

The producer interview documents the water source; the map position shows the distillery rather than the source.

History

Origin and Early Growth

Amrut Distilleries was founded in 1948 in Bangalore, India, by J.N.R. (J.N. Radhakrishna) under the name Amrut Laboratories. The region was an early important supplier of IMFL (India Made Foreign Liquor) to the local market and supplied the defence market.

Transition to Malt and International Breakthroughs

Over the years the company grew and began producing rum and brandy, before malt whisky was distilled in the 1980s. The malts were initially used in high-quality blends.

Global Stage and Fusion

Amrut Fusion Single Malt was launched in Glasgow in 2004. Fusion made Amrut known globally and, in 2010, Jim Murray named it the third-best whisky in the world. Global demand grew and the need for more capacity led to expansion in 2018. The new distillery plant was fully automatic and entirely Indian-made, while the old machinery was dedicated to peated whisky. Title: “The old plant will now be entirely dedicated to the production of peated whisky and the new plant to unpeated.”

Core Range, Amalgam and Innovation

Amrut’s core range in India includes Indian Single Malt (unpeated), Peated Indian Single Malt, Fusion (75% unpeated Indian barley and 25% peated Scottish barley) as well as Amalgam and Amalgam Peated, which are blends of malts from Amrut and other distilleries in Asia and Scotland. A large portion of the best malts, however, are exported to export markets.

Global Footprint and Products

Amrut is today exported to numerous countries and has created a number of special editions and single-cask releases, including Spectrum, Portonova, Intermediate Sherry, Kadhambam and many others. The vision and recognition have helped to make Amrut a pioneer in Indian single malt whisky.

Continued Growth and Experience

In addition, planned visitor facilities and further development of the distillery are underway, including expansions and experiences for whisky fans.

Non-contact

Production / Manufacturing

Amrut Distilleries is located in Bengaluru (Bangalore) and leverages a tropical climate to accelerate maturation and aging of spirits. The production process follows traditional steps: preparation, mashing, fermentation, distillation, maturation and bottling. The old distillery is allocated to peated whisky, while the new one focuses on unpeated expressions. The layouts are copied between the old and new facilities. Many expressions go through different cask types such as ex-bourbon, ex-oloroso sherry, port pipes and more. Some expressions are chill-filter-free and uncoloured, and ABV ranges from 46% to over 60% in limited editions.
