Bothy Distillery

About the distillery

Bothy Distillery is located in Glen Prosen in Angus, in a landscape between heather-clad hills and clear, babbling streams. The history, the nature and the future unfold in three recurring taglines: History is our guide, Nature is our neighbour and Spirit is our future. The distillery's operation is described as hydro-powered and sustainable, and the water from the glen plays a central role. For whisky enthusiasts it is especially cask ownership that threads through the present—with Glen Prosen Highland Single Malt as the focal point.

History

Glen Prosen as a smuggling environment in the 17th and 18th centuries

In the 17th and 18th centuries the glen was described as a stronghold for smugglers. Hidden bothies protected the craft, while routes such as Minister’s Path, Cateran Trail and Kilbo Pass served as secret lifelines.

Bothy Distillery has announced the appointment of Paddy Sinclair as Distillery Manager, in connection with legal whisky distillation returning to Glen Prosen for the first time in a long period.

Raw materials and production

Bothy Distillery describes a production that is rooted in the glen itself. The distillery is highlighted as hydro-powered and sustainable, and the narrative links “life” and operation to the water from Glen Prosen. On the whisky side, emphasis is placed on creating small-batch, artisanal whisky, and that it is part of a cask ownership framework with Glen Prosen Highland Single Malt. The provided text does not go into detail about technical steps such as mashing, fermentation or the distillation method for the whisky, but it places the craft in an environment where nature and the elements of the landscape are a central part of the identity.

Whiskies

The whisky programme in the provided text is presented particularly through cask ownership. Here Glen Prosen Highland Single Malt is highlighted as the premium single malt expression one can have an exclusive opportunity to own. Across Bothy Distillery’s overall universe it is also mentioned that the company is exploring several spirits lines and seasonal experiences in Glen Prosen, but the whisky information focuses primarily on the single malt and the cask approach.

Philosophy and craft

Bothy Distillery highlights three touchstones: History is our guide, Nature is our neighbour and Spirit is our future. The history takes shape through Glen Prosen’s stories of smuggling routes and hideouts, the nature is tied to environmental responsibility and the Scottish landscapes where distilleries thrive, and the future is linked to hydro-powered, sustainable operation as well as small-batch whisky. Cask ownership thus also becomes a concrete way to connect the past’s place-based stories with the next chapter of the whisky.

Sustainability

Hydro-powered, sustainable distillery.
