  • Founded in 1828 by the nobleman Stepan Stepanovich Krotkov.

  • One of Russia's oldest distilleries.

  • Whisky production began in earnest in 2015, and since 2022 the production of single malt has intensified, attracting attention both in Russia and internationally.

  • The distillery largely adheres to traditional methods with a focus on unique Russian flavour nuances.

Production details

  • Production uses traditional Scottish methods in combination with efforts to produce Russian flavour profiles.

  • The use of a range of special casks from around the world: American white oak, Sicilian Marsala wine cask, heavily charred Slavonian oak and even Moravian oak casks more than 2,000 years old.

  • Due to challenges with importing from Scotland, machinery was sourced from China to strengthen the production system and increase capacity.

  • Annual production volume is not specified in the sources; there has been a strong push since 2015, and especially in 2022 with a focus on single malt.

Whisky products

  • Product names include Kemlya Single Malt, Kemlya Russian Oak, and Kemlya 06.

  • The Kemlya Distillery brand is characterized by offering both single malts and cask finishes.

Tasting notes

  • The whiskies are described as having a rich aroma and a deep, complex flavour.

  • The complex profile is attributed to the use of diverse casks from different countries and wood types, including Moravian oak (aged cask) as well as American white oak, Slavonian oak and Marsala wine casks.
