History

Distillerie Miclo (G. Miclo) was founded in 1962 by Gilbert Miclo in Lapoutroie, Alsace, at the foot of the Vosges. Its approach to quality fruit-based eaux-de-vie has contributed to recognition at the Concours Général Agricole de Paris and to getting the products onto the tables of Michelin-starred restaurants. The Miclo family remains committed to a strong tradition, and the third generation joined in 2009 to further develop and expand the brand.

Production / Manufacturing

For whisky, Miclo began its first distillation experiments of malt mash in 2011, and the first bottles reached the market in late 2016. From the start they chose to produce exclusively Single Malt and have two peated references. The series is called 'Welche's Whisky' as a tribute to the company’s Alsace roots. The water for the whisky is drawn from Mont des Vosges, near the Devin dam, at an altitude of 950 metres. The materials and production follow IG Alsace, and they collaborate with the METEOR brewery for the malt mash; distillation, aging and bottling take place in Alsace. No sugar, caramel or flavorings are added, and the whisky is not chill-filtered to preserve the aromas after aging in casks.

Whisky Series

Welche's Whisky consists of four Single Malt references: aged in Burgundy casks, aged in Sauternes casks, and two references that are smoky and peated (Fumé and Tourbé). The alcohol content lies at 43% vol. or 46% vol., and the formats are 70 cl and 20 cl. All whiskies are fully aged in casks from major French domaines (Burgundy and Sauternes).
There is also Édition Limitée – SMALL BATCH: Master of Cask regularly selects individual casks and releases one barrique with a signature: SINGLE CASK 'Cuvée des Grands Palais'. The latest example includes Cherry Cask Finish (smoky notes after finishing in a cask that previously contained cherry eau-de-vie) and Single Cask #7 (8 years in Burgundy cask, bottled at cask strength 58.9%).

Philosophy and Quality

Miclo aligns with IG Alsace to ensure the origin of the raw materials and a shared production method. Distillation, aging and bottling take place in Alsace; no colorants or flavorings are added, and the products are not chill-filtered to preserve the aromas and character after aging in the casks.
