History

  • Coles whisky production began in the summer of 2014 following the construction of the distillery, an exceptional 4,000-litre pot- and column-still for a price of around £1.5 million.

  • The distillery is built on the courtyard at the White Hart Inn, a 600-year-old thatched inn and restaurant.

  • The Coles family are the first in Carmarthenshire to produce and flambé their own Welsh whisky.

  • Coles Single Malt Welsh Whisky has GI status and is the first and only Welsh spirit to receive this status.

  • The entire process from mashing to distillation, maturation and bottling takes place in Wales, and all water used in the production of Single Malt Whisky must be of Welsh origin.

Production details

  • The distillery is powered by a 4,000-litre pot still and column still.

  • The whisky product matures in ex-Jack Daniel's bourbon casks for at least five years, imparting the distinctive oak and flavor notes such as vanilla, caramel and raisins.

  • All stages of production (mashing, brewing, fermentation, distillation, maturation and bottling) are carried out in Wales.

  • All water used in the production of Single Malt Whisky must be of Welsh origin.

Whisky products

Tasting notes

  • Aging in bourbon casks contributes oak elements and notes such as vanilla, caramel and raisins, described as representative examples of the flavor profiles in Coles’ Single Malt Welsh Whisky.

Events and news

  • A Right Royal Visit: In the summer of 2003 HRH Prince Charles visited the White Hart Inn; he helped in the brewery by making a mash for the most popular beer Cwrw Blasus, and he poured his own pint and signed the guest book.

  • Distillery visits and tastings are available as part of the distillery tours, which are offered regularly.

  • Distillery tours: The tours typically start at 11:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, last about an hour and include tastings at the White Hart Inn; not suitable for children under 14; wheelchair-accessible facilities.

Company philosophy and values

  • Coles regards itself as having captured Wales in a glass, and emphasizes a family-rooted commitment to the production and bottling of Welsh whisky.
