Aber Falls Whisky Distillery – a short summary for whisky enthusiasts and investors

History

  • Aber Falls Distillery was launched in 2017 and began production in 2017/2018. The distillery is located in Abergwyngregyn near the Aber Falls waterfall in North Wales and marks the first whisky distillery in North Wales in over 100 years.

  • The first single malt whisky was released in May 2021. Today there is mention of ongoing, limited single-cask releases and additional releases in the portfolio, including various special releases produced in exciting cask types.

Production details

  • Production and ingredients: Spirits and whisky are produced with 100% Welsh malted grain and water from the distillery's own spring; distillation and maturation take place in Wales.

  • Production methods: Large copper stills are used for distillation and to remove sulfur, contributing to a clean and fruity profile.

  • Annual production and cask usage: Whisky is aged in a variety of wooden casks, including American oak casks (Bourbon/Oak), virgin oak and Spanish sherry casks to create a complex flavor. The cask sizes are not limited to standard – for example, the cask programme includes 200-liter American virgin oak casks.

  • Unique processes: All stages of production—from distillation to maturation and bottling—are said to take place in Wales; the distillery places particular emphasis on sustainability and local collaboration with farming and suppliers.

Whisky products

  • Aber Falls Madeira Cask Welsh Whisky – 70 cl (Madeira cask). Price around £35 (the product is shown as Madeira's Cask 70 cl; often sold as “Madeira Cask”), and in some listings this product is sold out.

  • Aber Falls Single Malt Welsh Whisky – Sherry Cask – Now bottled at 47% ABV (Sherry Cask release). The product name and details appear as single malt in a Sherry Cask, bottled at 47% ABV.

  • Note: The distillery has announced additional limited releases and various cask editions through their newsletters and catalog, including mentions of different cask-release projects and limited editions (for example mention of Aber Falls Distiller's Cut Manzanilla Cask).

Tasting notes

  • Madeira Cask (Madeira cask): Nose includes fresh peaches, apricots, honey, caramelized sugar and a hint of citrus. The palate is described as sweet and slightly dry, with honeyed fruitiness and notes of baked apples/pears, roasted nuts and almonds, finishing with a medium-long, warming finish.
