Nant Distilling Company

About the distillery

Nant Distilling Company is located in the central highlands of Tasmania and makes Australia’s only Highland Single Malt Whisky. The distillery is closely connected to the historic Nant Estate, which was purchased and restored in 2004, before commercial operations began in 2008. Local barley and water from the Clyde River both play a clear role in the house’s identity.

History

The story begins with Nant Estate, which can be traced back to around 1821. In 2004, the property was purchased and restored with great care, and the work laid the foundation for the distillery that later began commercial production in 2008. It was a reconstruction of a historic site rather than a project created from scratch, and it still shapes Nant’s profile. The whisky’s breakthrough came quickly: After only three years, Nant Single Malt Tasmanian Whisky with American Oak Bourbon Wood was highlighted internationally, where it earned 95.5 points in Jim Murray Whisky Bible and was placed among the world’s 50 best whiskies for 2012. Since then, Nant has also expanded the experience around the whisky with both a cellar door, restaurant, tours, and bars in several Australian cities.

Ingredients and production

Nant works with 100% Tasmanian brewer’s barley and water from the Clyde River, and these two are the most concrete pillars of the production, as described. The text does not go into details about malting, mashing, fermentation, or distillation, but it clearly shows that the ingredients are local and closely tied to Tasmania’s highland environment. The distillery also describes a practical side of whisky-making, where personally branded casks can be stored in their Government registered Bond Store, and where bottling and labelling services are offered. This points to a production that is not only about spirit, but also about storage, maturation, and finishing of casks for customers and enthusiasts.

Maturation and cask types

The clearest maturation profile in the material is American Oak Bourbon Wood, which is linked to the house’s single malt. In addition, a more experimental side is mentioned with cask-aged cocktails, where new-make spirit is combined with selected ingredients and matured in 20-liter French oak port wine casks. This shows that Nant uses cask aging both as classic whisky craftsmanship and as a place where smaller formats and other ingredients can be tested. Overall, the cask types are tied to American oak, bourbon, and port wine casks, and they are used to shape both whisky and special bar expressions.

Whiskies

The range, as presented here, is small and centered around Nant Single Malt Tasmanian Whisky. The main reference is the variant matured in American Oak Bourbon Wood, which is also the bottling that received the international recognition. In addition, there is a limited Blood Tub release in 500 mL. Beyond the bottles, Nant works with barrel ownership, bottling, and label services, so the experience goes beyond the classic retail bottle and also includes the oak cask and personal bottling.

Philosophy and craftsmanship

Nant emphasizes the connection to Tasmania’s highlands, to 100% Tasmanian brewer’s barley, and to water from the Clyde River. There is also a clear practical philosophy around ownership of casks, storage in bonded stores, and help with bottling and labelling. At the same time, the whisky experience is tied to the local cuisine through the restaurant’s focus on fresh Tasmanian ingredients.
