Old Commonwealth Distillery
Brief overview of the distillery
Old Commonwealth Distillery reimagines a historic Kentucky address with roots dating back to 1889. The facility has over the years been associated with names such as Old Hoffman, Old Spring, and Ezra Brooks. In 2024, new partners stepped in and revived the facility with a clear mission: to awaken forgotten brands and honor the people and periods that shaped the place. Work is being done with a unified collection called "Expressions" and an OC VIP program, which gives members early access to new bottles and events.
History
The history begins in 1889, referred to as The Hoffman Dynasty, where the site established itself as home to several classic Kentucky brands. After Prohibition, the Ripy brothers took over the operation and carried the facility forward until the late 1970s. In the 1980s, a Commonwealth era begins; during this period Julian Van Winkle III played a central role for about twenty years, continuing the family business and introducing several notable brands. In 2024, the facility was revived by new partners under the name Old Commonwealth, with a pronounced ambition to bring historic expressions back to market and to honor the site's heritage.
Whisky
The assortment is highlighted as a collection called "Expressions" and features names such as D.H. Cromwell, Kentucky Nectar, Colonel Randolph, and Old Commonwealth. The products are marketed as premium releases, and several bottles on the site are listed as sold out when searched. The company also communicates an OC VIP program, which gives members early access to releases, drops, and distillery activities.
