Dampfwerk Distilling

Overview of the Distillery

Dampfwerk Distilling is located in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and is a family-owned distillery founded in 2016. Here, German-inspired fruit brandies and craft liqueurs are combined with American product development. A hand-hammered copper still from the Black Forest and collaboration with local orchards are central elements of their approach, giving a hybrid character of traditional 'edelbranntweine' and modern spirit formats.

History

Dampfwerk was established in 2016 with the ambition to reintroduce classic German spirit traditions into an American environment. The initiative grew from a desire to preserve and share German food and drink culture, and owner Ralf brought more than two decades of experience in the food and beverage industry to the project. Early in the distillery's development, the family imported a hand-hammered copper still from the Black Forest in Baden to ensure traditional distillation techniques. Mary contributes with operations, design, and construction experience, Christian serves as head distiller and is responsible for production from fermentation to bottling, and Bridgit handles branding, marketing, and cocktail lounge operations. Together, they have built a product portfolio spanning from fruit brandies to gin, aquavit, liqueurs, and an American Single Malt.

Raw Materials and Production

Production rests on steam-based distillation in a hand-hammered copper still imported from the Black Forest. The distillation apparatus and the methodical approach reflect the distillery's focus on precision and craftsmanship. The raw materials for the fruit brandies come from local orchards and suppliers with particular emphasis on apples, pears, and grapes, while gin and liqueurs are built around selected premium botanicals. Head distiller Christian oversees the entire flow from fermentation to bottling to ensure consistency and quality. The combination of traditional European edelbranntwein methods and experimental American product development is a consistent feature of the production work.

Maturation and Barrel Types

Barrel aging is used selectively: several products in the portfolio bear the designation 'Barreled', for example Barreled Apple Brandy and Barreled Gin, which shows that wood aging is used to add further dimensions to selected releases. The choice of barrel type, previous contents, and aging durations varies between products.

Whiskies

The range covers classic German-inspired fruit brandies (pear, apple, barreled variants), a selection of gins (London Dry, Crane, Barreled Gin), aquavit, herbal and fruit liqueurs such as Helgolander, Orange Liqueur, Pfefferminz, and Pfeffersack, as well as an American Single Malt and bottles like Rabbit in the Rye. ABV values in the portfolio range from 36% for Orange Liqueur to 48.5% for Heide, illustrating a broad range of products and concentrations.

Style and Flavor Profile of the Whiskies

The documented style in the portfolio points in several directions: fruitiness is central (pear and apple in the fruit brandies, citrus in the orange liqueur), herb and mint notes appear in products such as Pfefferminz and Pfeffersack, and the 'Barreled' products hint at a wooden presence from barrel aging. These directions are reflected directly in product names and categories.
