Craft Distillers

About the Distillery

Craft Distillers operates as an importer and representative for a range of small, traditional spirit projects. They feature a broad palette of craft distillates: mezcals and raicillas from wild agaves, corn whiskey based on fresh white corn, small-batch whiskies, Highland rum, gin, pisco and a few older cognac casks. Each project is presented with an emphasis on raw materials, traditional processes and a single-batch approach.

History

The pages document collaborations with producers and importers, including mention of Ansley Coale as importer of mezcals and raicillas since 2004. Product descriptions mention awards, e.g., Pisco LOGIA's title at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles in 2011 and Dakaben's prize at Cocktail Spirits in Paris in 2019. A notable event is the cessation of The Exceptional series after Don Sutcliffe's death; the series will not be relaunched and remaining stock is sold through selected retailers. Several product descriptions highlight traditional regions and techniques from Jalisco, Oaxaca, and other Mexican regions.

Raw Materials and Production

Production texts describe adapting traditional techniques to the individual spirit types. The corn whiskey project uses fresh-harvested white corn instead of dried yellow field corn. Whiskies are produced from a variety of grains (barley, corn, rye, wheat, oats) using conventional methods via mash, fermentation and subsequent distillation on either pot still or column still. The gin production details re-distillation of a wheat-based neutral spirit on a Germain-Robin 16HL and a small Holstein pot still after infusion with juniper and other botanicals. The Mexican agave distillates are described as artisanal: many mezcals are distilled with the fermented agave solids included, and some bottles are produced as one-off batches with high shares of wild agave. Rum from the project is distilled from freshly pressed sugarcane juice on pot-still-like equipment.

Aging and Cask Types

The descriptions focus predominantly on raw materials and distillation. The cognac product Pierre de Segonzac is described as family-owned since 1702, with cellars housing older cognacs; a date, 1974, is mentioned in the cellar. For whisky, details about casks, previous contents, finishes or aging regimes are not extensively documented in the available product texts.

Whiskies

The portfolio includes both in-house projects and small brands represented. Examples of whiskies in the portfolio are Devin’s Soft ’n Tasty Corn Whiskey (fresh white corn), Low Gap (multi-grain whisky series) and The Exceptional (formerly a small-batch series, now discontinued). In addition to whisky, the portfolio includes extensive Mexican agave distillates (mezcal, raicilla, sotol), rum from fresh sugarcane juice, gin, pisco and cognac. Many releases are described as single-batch or small-batch.

Whisky Type / Series Flavor Profile Status
Devin’s Soft ‘n Tasty Corn Whiskey Corn Whiskey The project reinvented corn whiskey by distilling fresh-harvested white corn — the corn you buy to eat — instead of the dried yellow field corn typically used in bourbon.
Low Gap Whisky (multi-grain concept) Low Gap is planned as a series of whiskies, including versions made from several different grains; the pages describe the mash, fermentation and distillation on either pot still or column.
The Exceptional Small-batch blended whisky A range of small-batch whiskies assembled by Don Sutcliffe and blended by Willie Phillips; the series will not be bottled again in regular distribution after Don Sutcliffe's death, and remaining stock is distributed to select retailers. Discontinued; Not in regular distribution; remaining stock sold via selected retailers per the product text.

Philosophy and Craft

The company emphasizes supporting the communities and traditional production methods from which the raw materials originate. The projects deliberately prioritize raw material choices, small-scale production and collaboration with family-owned distilleries as well as single-batch approaches.
