Smögen Whisky AB

About the distillery

Smögen is a micro-scale single malt whisky distillery on the west coast of Bohuslän, north of Smögen island and just southeast of Hunnebostrand. Here, everything is about small batches, manual production, and a distinctive style with a clear peat smoke character, a malty body, and character from casks and coastal maturation.

History

Smögen Whisky AB was founded in the summer of 2009 on the west coast of Bohuslän with the aim of creating malt whisky with great character and distinct coastal influences. The distillery today operates from the farm setting of Ståleröd Ljungliden 1, where production, warehousing, and bottling are all in the same place. Since 2020, Swedish, heavily peated, floor-malted barley has been used especially for the spirit, and this underscores a development where both ingredients and process have been adjusted to deliver more character in the glass. At the same time, the scale is kept small, and the entire production is monitored closely and personally. Smögen is not built around volume, but around precision, intensity, and an expression that should be both robust and unmistakably recognizable. Alongside this, the house has established Askeim as a separate whisky name for spirit made on heritage barley, so the more malt-focused style is not confused with Smögen’s peated main profile.

Ingredients and production

Smögen sources malted barley from dedicated maltsters in Scotland or Sweden. For the Smögen style, the malt is heavily peated, while Askeim uses heritage barley such as Golden Promise, Maris Otter, Plumage Archer, and Chevallier, typically with light peat or completely without peat. The production process is entirely manual. The malt is delivered in 25 kg sacks; nine sacks make up a batch, and 225 kg of grist is mashed in a manually operated mash tun with two additions of heated water. The wort is cooled to around 20 °C and fermented with distiller’s yeast over six to seven days, resulting in a very long fermentation and thus precursors for fruity esters. Distillation takes place on two pot stills heated with direct electric heat. The wash still runs first, followed by the spirit still, and the spirit run is divided into foreshots, heart, and tails with cut points around 75 and 62% alcohol. This yields about 115 liters of new make spirit at roughly 71% alcohol per run. For Askeim, the spirit still runs at a slower pace and with different cut points, so the distillate becomes stronger and more pronounced in the malt.

Maturation and cask types

All new make is matured on site. Smögen uses predominantly first fill casks and also a fair amount of virgin oak—both types with high activity—and the casks are typically reused only one or two times. In addition, a broad range of previously used casks are employed, including bourbon, sherry, Sauternes, Madeira, Cognac, and rum. The casks range from small octave casks to large 600-liter gorda casks, so maturation can be shaped differently depending on volume and the influence of the wood. Smögen is typically bottled at high strength, often around cask strength, while the most balanced single casks are bottled only on their own, and larger volumes are collected into batch bottlings. The overall philosophy is to use active casks that can provide clear wood character while also supporting the distillate’s own power.

Whiskies

The range is concentrated on two distinct tracks. The Smögen series consists of single cask bottlings and small batch bottlings, which are the heavily peated main profile with a strong malt body and clear cask influence. Askeim is the parallel series for heritage barley, where the style is more old school, more malt-led, and with far less overt peat. Together, they provide a range that does not chase uniformity, but differences in ingredient selection, fermentation length, cut points, and cask combinations. The common thread is power, depth, and intensity, but the two names show very different sides of the same distillery.

The style and flavor profile of the whiskies

Smögen has a distinct malty and peated base note with fruity overtones and a pronounced cask character. In the glass, it moves from freshly baked baguette, sponge cake, and biscuity notes over into vanilla, cedar, and shaved or polished oak, and multiple releases also point toward apricot, citrus, ground black pepper, nutmeg, clove, as well as winey notes. Askeim pulls the flavor even more toward the big malt fullness, where the older barley types deliver a rich, full, generous profile with a more restrained level of smoky peat.

Philosophy and craftsmanship

Smögen works from a clear doctrine of high quality and great character in small batches. The production is entirely manual and closely monitored all the way through, and local ingredients are used whenever they can match the requirements for quality and character. At the same time, consistency is not the goal; the goal is a powerful, unmistakable whisky expression with clear body, smoke, and cask character.
