Blue Rascal Distillery

About the Distillery

Blue Rascal Distillery is located in Hammonton, New Jersey, in the blueberry country, and builds its lineup around local ingredients. The distillery produces blueberry brandy, blueberry-flavoured vodka, gin, rum, a range of hand-batched liqueurs, and whiskies, and operates a tasting room with regular hours and events.

History

Rooted in the local community

Blue Rascal Distillery is clearly rooted in the Hammonton region and highlights collaborations with local farmers and businesses. The distillery's identity is built on using the blueberry varieties grown in the surrounding fields and on participation in local markets and festivals.

Media attention

The distillery has received regional media attention, including a visit from Fox 29 anchor Bob Kelly, who toured the site for a tour.

Raw Materials and Production

The raw material profile centers on fresh local blueberries for brandy, liqueurs, and some gin variants, while grains such as rye, wheat and corn are used for whiskey and vodka. Blueberry brandy is produced as a German-style eau de vie from whole blueberries; gin is produced by re-distilling grain-neutral spirit with classic botanicals and fresh blueberries. Vodka is produced as a corn vodka, and rum is based on blackstrap molasses. Several liqueurs are hand-batched from fruit juice and natural flavors. The production is consistently presented as small batches and handcrafted in approach.

Maturation and Barrel Types

Barrel Honey-Flavored Rum is aged in new char #3 American oak barrels, and Blueberry Brandy Reserve 113 is described with notes of oak, indicating the use of oak in aging. Rye- and wheat whiskies are indicated to be aged at least 3½ years, but few details are given about prior cask contents or more specific barrel programs.

Whiskies

The lineup ranges from blueberry-focused products — blueberry brandy, blueberry-flavoured vodka, and several fruit liqueurs — to classic spirit types such as gin, vodka, rum, and whiskies (rye and wheat, as well as a coffee-flavored whiskey). The liqueur line includes several fruit flavors in 375 ml bottles, and several products are available in the tasting room as well as in selected shops in southern New Jersey.
