Algodones Distillery

Quick overview of the distillery

Algodones Distillery sits by the Rio Grande in Algodones, New Mexico, and presents itself as an Arts & Crafts‑inspired, small‑batch distillery. The distillery works with local ingredients—from roasted blue corn to juniper and piñon—and combines traditional pot stills and a Spanish alembic Hoga still with aging in a bosque rickhouse. The result is a small, place‑based production of vodka, gin and whiskies marketed as "The Spirits of New Mexico".

Raw materials and production

The raw materials are largely local: the distillery mentions New Mexico blue corn, juniper, piñon and pecans. Blue corn mashes are mashed and fermented on site, and for LUNA Blue Corn Moonshine a Spanish Hoga Still is used for double distillation. The distillery generally uses traditional pot stills, while vodka (CLARO) is distilled five times and filtered for a clean profile. Gin products are distilled with a blend of highland and bosque botanicals, including juniper and piñon; a juniper‑based liqueur (ENEBRO) is made on the gin base and infused with lavender. The water source is described as artesian well water. Production occurs in small batches with an emphasis on craft over large‑scale production.

Maturation and cask types

Algodones uses both new, charred American oak barrels and used bourbon barrels in their aging. Baby Blue Corn Bourbon (NIÑA) is placed in small, charred new American oak barrels and ages in the distillery's bosque rickhouse for a period stated as 6–30 months. MAÍZ is a single‑barrel concept, where individual used bourbon barrels are filled with LUNA Blue Corn Moonshine Whiskey and aged in the distillery's bosque rickhouse to highlight diverse barrel characteristics. The gin product Armada is an example of aging gin in used bourbon barrels, where the spirit meets the influence of oak.

The whiskies' style and flavor profile

The overarching style draws on local ingredients and highland botanicals: roasted New Mexico blue corn is central to the distillery's whiskies, while gin products highlight juniper and piñon. The juniper liqueur contains lavender, which forms a floral direction in the portfolio. In addition, pecans are noted as a core element in the upcoming PACANA. The combination of botanicals and oak aging (new American barrels and used bourbon barrels) shapes the overall flavor profile.

Philosophy and craft

Algodones builds its practice on the Arts & Crafts ethos: a focus on handmade quality, local ingredients and products that reflect their time and place. Mottos such as "Small Batched", "Locally Sourced" and "Kindly Crafted" emphasize a value of responsible craftsmanship, local rooting, and a conscious, small‑scale approach to distillation.
