A. Smith Bowman Distillery

Overview of the Distillery

A. Smith Bowman Distillery is Virginia's oldest family-owned distillery, now located in Fredericksburg. The site combines traditions from founder A. Smith Bowman with modern small-batch production and experimental barrel finishes. The distillery is known for its craft bourbons, for the stills named "Mary" and "George," and for having earned international recognition at the World Whiskies Awards.

History

The history begins in 1927, when A. Smith Bowman purchased Sunset Hills Farm in Fairfax County to operate a dairy and store grain. The surplus of grain led to the establishment of a distillery, and in 1934 Bowman built a distillery building where, with help from his two sons, he produced the first batch of Virginia Gentleman. Until the 1950s, the company was the sole legal whiskey producer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Since then, the distillery has moved to Fredericksburg, preserving family traditions and developing toward premium small-batch releases and experimental series. In 2016 and 2017, the distillery received the title "World’s Best Bourbon" at the World Whiskies Awards.

Raw Materials and Production

Production at A. Smith Bowman is built on small-batch production and close attention to every stage of production. The text highlights fermentation of mash and filling of two named pot stills, "Mary" and "George." Master distiller David Bock leads the work to develop new mash bills, test different barrel finishes, and create experimental series. The staff includes teams for operations, visitor experiences, and the shop, all contributing to daily production and distribution.

Maturation and Barrel Types

The distillery primarily uses American White Oak for long-term aging of their bourbons and works with subsequent barrel finishes. Port finish is documented as a method used for specific releases, where bourbon aged in American White Oak is transferred to barrels that previously held port wine.

Whiskies

The assortment includes classic bourbons and a range of experimental small-batch releases. Names associated with the distillery include Isaac Bowman, Virginia Gentleman, John J. Bowman and Bowman Brothers. Isaac Bowman is described as a bourbon aged in American White Oak and finished in barrels that previously held port wine, and is highlighted as a central release in the portfolio.
