Description

The highball glass is a tall, slim glass designed for long drinks, combining whisky with a mixer such as soda water, cola or ginger ale. The glass provides ample space for ice and a sufficient amount of liquid, so the drink stays cold and dilutes slowly.

• Typical volume: about 240–350 ml

• Height: about 12–15 cm

• Top diameter: about 6–9 cm

• Material: lead-free glass or crystal; often manufactured for clarity and durability

Uses

Preparation

1. Fill the glass with ice to about 2/3

2. Add 40–60 ml whisky (adjust to strength and taste)

3. Top with desired mixer (cola, soda, ginger ale or a mix)

4. Stir gently and serve, preferably with a lemon twist or lime wedge as garnish

• Collins glass: slightly taller and narrower than the highball, often 300–350 ml; used for the same type of long drinks

History

The word 'highball' comes from the early 20th century in the United States and refers to a long drink served in a tall glass. The glass was sought after because it allowed more ice and a longer dilution, which suited whisky-based long drinks.

Maintenance

• Wash the glass with soap and warm water after use, avoiding breakage by avoiding sudden temperature changes

• Most highball glasses are dishwasher-safe on a gentle cycle, but crystal glassware is recommended to be hand-washed.
