History

Garnheath whisky distillery was part of the gigantic Moffat distillery complex. Although the distillery was described as a modern and purpose-built building, it only survived 21 years before it was demolished.

Origins and Construction

1964: Inver House Distillers was founded and built the Moffat malt and grain distillery. 1965: Garnheath grain distillery and Killyloch, as well as Glen Flagler malt distilleries, began production. 1970: Killyloch distillery fell silent. 1976: Glen Flagler distillery also fell silent. 1985: Chairwoman Helen Publiker died, leaving the company with debts of around $39 billion. 1986: After a management buyout, the Garnheath distillery was demolished; its stills were removed and only warehouses remained. These warehouses have since been subject to plans for expansion and development.

The remainder of the Moffat complex was largely demolished, and only the warehouse buildings remained for decades while planning for redevelopment took place.

No official bottlings exist, but Garnheath is represented in some independent bottlings from Douglas Laing’s XOP and Clan Denny and The Vintage Malt Whisky Co. Cooper’s Choice labels.
