The Glenturret Distillery
An overview of the distillery
The Glenturret is located at The Hosh near Crieff in Perthshire and calls itself Scotland’s oldest operating distillery. Here, single malt whisky meets a house with guided tours, daily opening hours, tastings, and a restaurant with Michelin-level cooking. It’s a place where both the wider core of annual releases and some of the distillery’s rarest bottles tell the same story of time, oak, and patience.
History
The distillery traces its history back to 1763 and highlights that continuity as its hallmark. In the story of the house, old casks and long maturation play an important role, and this is clearly seen in 50 Years Old, where a cask filled on 25 February 1972 was allowed to rest in the traditional dunnage warehouses for more than five decades. Later releases show how the distillery works both in the present and as heritage: Provenance was bottled in December 2020 as the first part of the Trinity series with Lalique, Prowess followed in December 2022, and in 2023, 35 Years Old was added to the lineup. In 2025, both 25 Years Old and Deux Terrains arrived, and in 2026, a distillery-exclusive 2012 Vintage Cask was presented from the shop in Crieff. The name Bob Dalgarno appears across several of the most high-profile releases and ties newer releases together with the distillery’s modern identity.
Raw materials and production
The Glenturret works with single malt Scotch whisky and shows a clear contrast between classic sherry-influenced expressions and peated editions. In the current range, the style runs from 7 Years Old Peat Smoked, built on peated spirit, to 10 Years Old Peat Smoked, where the smoke comes together with dried fruit and e.g. Core releases 12 Years Old and 15 Years Old focus on the interplay between European and American oak, while special editions like Eclosion are composed primarily of European oak PX sherry casks with a single American oak puncheon. Deux Terrains goes one step further: it first matures in sherry-seasoned oak and is then transferred to Sauternes casks. Other rare bottles show that the distillery works with selected casks—often assembled from multiple casks—as in Jaguar C-Type and Jaguar D-Type. The products highlight craft, balance, and precision, and the distillery itself describes small batches and carefully selected releases as part of its approach.
Maturation and cask types
Maturation is one of the distillery’s clearest strengths. Sherry-seasoned oak appears across several exclusive editions, while both European and American oak are actively used to shape sweetness, spice, and depth. Deux Terrains is a good example of layered complexity: first sherry-seasoned oak, then Sauternes casks, which add a lighter fruit profile. Eclosion is built on PX sherry casks and a single American puncheon, providing balance between depth and lifted brightness. 35 Years Old is created from a single European Oak sherry butt, and 50 Years Old comes from a refill Sherry cask that has lain in the traditional dunnage warehouses for more than five decades. For the peated range, cask marrying between American and European oak helps to steer smoke, vanilla, and spice.
Whiskies
At the core of the range are the annual 12-, 15-, 25- and the peated 7- and 10-year-old editions, which provide a clear overview of the house style. In addition, there are limited editions such as Eclosion and Deux Terrains, and in the more rare end of the spectrum are the special collaborations with Lalique and Jaguar, as well as extremely limited bottles like 35 Years Old and 50 Years Old. Overall, the portfolio spans from accessible vintage whiskies to collectible items in very small batches, but they all share a clear emphasis on oak, sherry character, ripe fruit, and a well-judged spice profile.

The style and tasting profile of the whiskies
Glenturret clearly moves between three threads: light fruits, spiced wood, and a soft sweetness. Citrus, pineapple, apple, and tropical fruit recur in the more lively expressions, while dates, figs, sultanas, and dried fruits provide a darker fruit core in the older and more sherry-influenced bottles. Vanilla, honey, toffee, and caramelised notes round out the house style, and spices like ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and wood spices bind everything together. In the peated editions, peat smoke and smouldering peat come through, often kept in balance by oak and sweet fruit.
Visit the distillery
Visiting is an integral part of the Glenturret experience. The distillery is open Monday to Sunday from 10 to 18, and guests can book distillery tours, exclusive guided tastings, as well as experiences in the dram bar and Lalique Bar. The Dram Bar is open daily from 11, while Lalique Bar is open Thursday to Saturday from 12. The restaurant offers a tasting menu Wednesday to Saturday, and reservation is required.
