Gefjun Distillery
Short about the distillery
Gefjun Distillery is a Danish nano-batch distillery based in Gl. Havdrup near Solrød Strand. They work in small batches and with local raw materials across gin, rum, vodka and whisky. It is a place that consciously goes against the norm and builds its bottles from the ground up so each vintage gets its own character.
History
Gefjun began as an idea for a stag party, where friends discovered they could make spirits better themselves. The distillery was established in 2019 and later developed into a Danish nano-batch distillery with production in Gl. Havdrup and administrative headquarters in Skovlunde. Alan Kampman is the driving master distiller, while Michael Reibel Boesen serves as CEO and the one who keeps the administrative side together. Small batches, local raw materials and their own vintages play a large role in the range and the story around the distillery, and that approach is also evident in their products, where they emphasize working from the ground up. The distillery has also made its mark in competitions in Berlin, where Gefion Orlog Rum won double gold in 2022, and Abild Gin won silver the same year. This shows a house that has quickly gained a foothold with releases that are characterized by ingredient focus and a clear, independent style.
Raw materials and production
Gefjun makes spirits from scratch in small batches and describes itself as a nano-batch distillery. Production is based on concrete raw materials such as organic wheat for the vodka, apples from Lolland for the gin and rhubarb picked in Gl. Havdrup. The distillery also emphasizes that their individual vintages are influenced by Danish soil, the weather and the environment, so each batch gets its own expression. They do not work with standard off-the-shelf products but with their own spirits created from the ground up. The documented process also includes a rum blend where one component is distilled in a column still and the Dominican component is based on sugarcane juice.
Maturation and cask types
Most concretely, maturation is described for Gefion Orlog Rum, where a Dominican component has been aged for 8 years in ex-bourbon barrels. The rum is composed as a blend with a Venezuelan component, and there is also a solera system with parts between 2 and 8 years. This gives the impression of a distillery that works both with mature components and blending as a method, rather than with a single classic cask profile alone.
Whiskies
The whisky range is small and centered on Gefjun URT Whisky, which appears in the collection as the distillery's whisky release. The rest of the range is broader and includes gin, rum and vodka, among others the classic GEFJUN GIN, GEFJUN GIN Navy, GEFJUN GIN Rhubarb, Gefion Orlog Rum, 2024 Gefjun New Tomorrow Rum Espresso as well as GEFJUN VODKA and GEFJUN VODKA Sort Muld. The overall impression is a lineup with few, clearly named expressions, where ingredients and style vary from floral citrus to fruity and fuller rum expressions.

Whiskies' style and tasting profile
The tasting profile ranges from a floral and citrus-driven gin through a gin with citrus and juniper to more summery or fruity expressions with rhubarb and apple. Orlog Rum adds a rounder and sweeter profile with fruit, sweet cream caramel, vanilla and dark brown sugar, and it is described as full-bodied with good warmth. Altogether this paints a picture of a distillery that works with clear flavor markers and distinct ingredient character.

Philosophy and craftsmanship
Gefjun works from a clear desire to go against the current and challenge the norm. They want to create spirits that stand out, and they do so in small batches with a focus on local ingredients and craftsmanship. The whole point is to make their own spirits from the ground up so the taste does not become anonymous, but bears the imprint of ingredients, place and vintage.
