Far North Spirits

Short overview of the distillery

Far North Spirits is located in the far north of Minnesota on a Swanson farm and is one of the United States' most terroir‑driven estate distilleries. Since 2013 they have cultivated open‑pollinated rye varieties and heirloom corn on their own land, turning every step—from seed to barrel—into small‑batch rye and bourbon, with the grain's origin in focus.

History

The Swanson family has been farming the land since 1917, and in 2013 Michael Swanson built the distillery on a former wheat field with the ambition of full integration between farming and distilling. In the years that followed, the distillery has worked with heritage grains: Rosen rye was reintroduced in 2015, and Keystone Rosen was planted on a specific field parcel in 2021. Work with single‑varietals and traceability has led to recognition, including the 2026 Innovation Winner title from the Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S.

Raw materials and production

Production begins in the field: aside from malted barley, all grain is grown within about a mile of the distillery. They select open‑pollinated single‑varietals such as AC Hazlet, Musketeer, Oklon, and Rosen, as well as heirloom corn (Minnesota 13) for their distinctive aroma profile. The malted Rosen is produced externally by Vertical Malt for the malted components. Fermentation takes place in open‑top fermenters with a house‑selected yeast over 4–5 days. The distillation is small‑batch and performed twice to around 150 proof on a 500 gallon hybrid pot still with an 8‑plate Vendome column, and many expressions are unchillfiltered.

Aging and cask types

Aging takes place in different cask sizes and types to control contact and development: new 15‑gallon casks are used for faster development, while new 53‑gallon American casks provide slower, more restrained development. Roknar line is typically rested in small charred oak casks and can be finished in cognac casks. Bødalen bourbon is aged in Minnesota‑produced oak barrels, and the distillery also reuses its own rye casks to mature other spirits such as Ålander rum.

Whiskies

The core comprises the single‑varietal rye series (Hazlet, Musketeer, Oklon, Rosen), the Roknar series with both standard and Bottled‑in‑Bond editions, and the Bødalen bourbon. The products range from 2‑year‑old small‑batch releases in 15‑gallon casks to Bottled‑in‑Bond releases aged in 53‑gallon casks, and the distillery also produces gin and rum to supplement the grain‑focused whiskies.

Whisky styles and flavor profiles

Through the portfolio, three clear directions run: a warm, vanilla‑forward sweetness especially from the AC Hazlet variants; spicy baking spices, sandalwood and dried stone fruits in lines like Musketeer and Oklon; and deep caramel and peppery spices in heritage varieties like Rosen. The combination of specific mash bills, small casks, and local oak types shapes these consistent aroma and flavor trajectories.

Philosophy and craft

Far North operates from an estate philosophy: they cultivate their own open‑pollinated varietals to highlight the grain’s character in the whiskey and document provenance. The choice of single‑varietal rye and heirloom corn, as well as the reuse of spent grain, reflect an agricultural, regenerative approach to spirit production.

Sustainability

All grain except malted barley is grown within about a mile and stored locally to avoid shipping and milling of grain. Spent grain is collected by a local cattle farmer for feed or spread on fields to rebuild the soil’s organic matter.
