Wild Turkey in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, is both a historic distillery and a well-known bourbon brand. With roots dating back to the Ripy Brothers' distillery from 1869 and a family-led Master Distiller tradition (Jimmy and Eddie Russell), Wild Turkey has been noted for its steadfast product philosophy: patient aging in American white oak and the use of deep No. 4 "alligator" char as a distinctive hallmark.
History
Wild Turkey's history stretches from the mid-1800s to the present day. Austin Nichols began trading wine and spirits in 1855, and in 1869 the Ripy Brothers opened their distillery on Wild Turkey Hill in Lawrenceburg. In 1893, Ripy Brothers represented Kentucky at the World’s Fair in Chicago. The name "Wild Turkey" originated in 1940 after a hunting trip, when a distillery employee shared his bourbon with friends. In 1954 Jimmy Russell joined, who for decades became a central Master Distiller figure; his son Eddie started in 1981 and later rose through the ranks. From the late 20th century, Wild Turkey introduced new formats such as Rare Breed (1991) and single-barrel Kentucky Spirit (1995). In the 2000s and 2010s, both Jimmy and Eddie were inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame, and in 2016 Matthew McConaughey joined as Creative Director. In 2018 Longbranch arrived as a co-creation project, and in 2020 Rare Breed Rye was introduced. In 2024, Jimmy Russell marked 70 years with Wild Turkey.

The whiskies' style and flavor profile
Across the products, several recurring threads appear: sweetness in the form of vanilla and caramel (often mentioned in bourbon descriptions), strong spice levels and rye-spice in the rye expressions, and a warm, light smoke or smokiness that is especially noted for 101 Rye.
