About the distillery

Tin Shed Distilling Co. is located in Nairne in South Australia and stands behind Iniquity Whisky, Requiem Rum, and Piotr Vodka. It’s a small, hand-driven operation where single malt whisky, experimental cask aging, and local ingredients take center stage. The Iniquity range in particular shows the breadth of the house: from easy-drinking batches to cask strength releases, smoky expressions, and small, distinctive limited releases.

History

Tin Shed Distilling Co. didn’t start as a boardroom project, but as a conversation over a school fence between two friends: a postman and a flagpole maker. That human beginning echoes throughout the entire place, where Vic Orlow is mentioned as the founder, and where his family history is also woven into Piotr Vodka, named after his father, Piotr Mikhailovich Laptev. After the opening of the distillery in Nairne, TSD Spirits came next as a separate series, and since then Iniquity Whisky has grown into the house’s clearest whisky identity. Here, the distillery brings together core releases, small batches, distinctive cask expressions, and very small member and cellar-door releases under the same umbrella.

Ingredients and production

The production is clearly craft-focused. The distillery states that everything is done by hand—from grinding malt and stirring the mash to the cut, moving casks, selecting casks, bottling, labeling, and shipping. The whisky work is built on local ingredients, and both local grain, local peat, and local Mallee stems are used for smoking. The whisky is not chill-filtered, and that is a deliberate part of the house’s way of working. Several releases also show that Tin Shed works across both malt and grain profiles: TSD Nairne Whisky is a blend of lightly smoked single malt and re-distilled grain wheat spirit, while other expressions are kept as single malt. Overall, it’s a distillery that combines classic malt whisky with the freedom to blend, smoke up, and play with different spirit bases.

Aging and cask types

A wide range of maturation is used. The Silver Batch Series is laid down in port or sherry casks and bottled at around 46% ABV, while the Gold Batch Series is described as star casks—typically a single cask—and cask strength at 55–60% ABV. Talamara uses ex-shiraz casks, and the Solera release is matured as peated malt spirit in a Solera system with predominantly Shiraz barrels. The Anomaly series is where the house gathers its more unusual experiments, including cuvée, rum, and smoke from the Bramley apple tree. AFA also shows a long maturation in ex-bourbon followed by a 30-month finish in ex-PX, underlining how much the casks and finishing matter in the house’s whisky-making.

Whiskies

The core range is clearly built around Iniquity Whisky, but the lineup has multiple layers. The Silver Batch Series is the more accessible, house-style line with fruit, chocolate, and caramel. The Gold Batch Series is more concentrated, often single cask and bottled at cask strength. Platinum is the most small-batch oriented part, while Talamara represents an entry-level single malt with smoke. Added to that is the Anomaly Series, which brings together the more playful and limited releases, as well as Den’s Dram, where very small cellar-door and mailing list batches appear. Nairne Whisky sits as a more approachable alternative to Iniquity, intended as an everyday dram that’s still made with care.

Whisky style and flavor profile

The style revolves around green apples, pineapple marmalade, and other bright fruit notes on the lighter end, but also around dark berries, stone fruit, and jammy shiraz in the more cask-influenced expressions. Alongside this are clear traces of toffee apple, crème brûlée, burnt butter, milk chocolate, and caramel, which give the house’s whisky a sweet and full-bodied core. The smoke ranges from subtle campfire and light smoke to more pronounced peated expressions, and several whiskies also lean into spices like nutmeg, smoky paprika, and a savoury character that’s a bit drier.
