About the distillery

Mælkevejen Distillery is a Danish distillery in Ørslev, created from a fusion between cocktail-bar talent and people with experience in spirits sales and marketing. The distillery opened in 2023 and works with aquavit as a tribute to Danish spirits heritage, which they believe has been underdeveloped over the last 100 years. On site you will find the distillery, an event area and a café/shop — and it provides a more immersive way to experience their universe than a regular store visit.

History

Mælkevejen Distillery was born out of an interaction between the cool cocktail-bar scene and the more commercial side of the spirits world. At the center is Adeline Shepherd-Lomborg, who has a background from cocktail bars in both the UK and Denmark. After she and Rasmus Shepherd-Lomborg previously opened cocktail bars in Copenhagen, she shifted her focus to distilling and opened Mælkevejen Distillery in 2023. The team also describes how the whole journey has been supported by the European Union, along with combined experience from the restaurant industry and spirits import/distribution. The result is a distillery where guest experience and quality in spirit production go hand in hand.

Raw materials and production

Distinct production characteristics include aquavit in the Nordic tradition, caraway-based aquavit and a flavor profile with tropical undertones.

Whiskies

Based on the provided material there is currently one specific aquavit, Fury. It is described as a modern craft aquavit based on caraway and produced in the Nordic tradition, which also includes subtle tropical undertones. In addition, gift cards and activities are mentioned, but only Fury has an independent product entry in the supplied text excerpt.

General flavor profile

The material concerns aquavit, not whisky. Fury is described as caraway-based with an aroma and taste featuring tropical fruit notes as well as spicy, herbal tones.

Fruitiness is described as sweet and warm hints as well as citrus and tropical notes (including pineapple/orange, citrus, lime). Spices are described as a spicy and herbal character including ginger and anise, as well as lemongrass.

Visit the distillery

You can stop by Mælkevejen Distillery in Ørslev. In addition to the distillery itself, the site has an event area with room for 150 guests and a café/shop. There are contact details for visits and inquiries, including phone and email, as well as an address at Ørslevvej 94A in Vordingborg.

Philosophy and craftsmanship

Mælkevejen Distillery focuses intentionally on aquavit because they see it as part of the Danish spirits heritage—heritage which they believe has been forgotten and not developed much over the past 100 years. At the same time they emphasize a team that combines experience from cocktail bars and hospitality with knowledge from spirits import and distribution, and they bring together over 80 years of experience in the spirits industry in their product development.
