Knaplund Distillery

Quick look at the distillery

Knaplund Distillery is located on the Jutland heath in West Jutland and is set up like a small ranch with Texas Longhorns, a shop, and a showroom. Here, whisky, gin, and moonshine meet in a clearly American-inspired setting, and guests can both taste, buy, and get up close to the production. For whisky enthusiasts, the place is especially interesting because it combines award-winning spirits with a very guest-friendly visit model.

History

Knaplund tells its story as a journey from an old continuation school to an award-winning distillery. In the private tastings and guided tours, this development is made part of the experience, so visitors hear how the site has grown and worked its way into competitions and press coverage. Among the dated highlights on the website, there is an award in the USA in 2019, mentions of West Jutland whiskey and Honey Whiskey in 2020, and a description of the distillery as being in wild growth in 2022. The story is therefore both an entrepreneur tale and a story about a distillery that over time has gained greater attention for its products and its way of working.

Raw materials and production

Knaplund works with whisky, gin, and moonshine and is happy to open up the production to guests through tours all the way inside the distillery. Tastings can be put together with a focus on gin, rum, or whiskey, and there is also a ginbuilding course where you make your own gin with different botanicals. When the visit focuses on whiskey and rum, guests get to join the barrel-aging area and end with a signature Old Fashioned. The distillery also offers tastings in the customer’s own premises, where you get an insight into history, inspiration, and production methods. There is no information about malting, mashing, fermentation, or still type in the material, so the documented picture is first and foremost craft being communicated through tasting, tours, and flexible arrangements.

Maturation and types of barrels

What clearly comes up again and again is barrel aging. One of the tastings focuses on whiskey and rum and takes place in the barrel-aging area, and the products are described in several contexts as barrel-aged. No specific barrel types, previous contents, or special finishes are mentioned, so the aging here appears as part of the experience and as a central part of the distillery’s approach to whiskey and rum.

Whiskies

The range spans gin, whiskey, and moonshine, and in the context of visits and the shop, tasting samples of all variants are highlighted. For whisky lovers, Rye whiskey, Atlantic Aged Bourbon, and Honey Whiskey are the most clearly named expressions in the material. In addition, the whiskey is linked to award-winning mentions and to tastings where it is included together with rum. The portfolio therefore seems broader than a pure whisky series and includes both classic and more flavor-driven expressions that fit the distillery’s American-inspired profile.

Whisky Type / series Tasting profile Status
Rye whiskey Whiskey Mentioned as one of the distillery’s popular and award-winning whiskies. Current
Atlantic Aged Bourbon Whiskey Mentioned as one of the distillery’s products and also used in a cocktail context. Current
Honey Whiskey Whiskey Mentioned in connection with an award and as one of the distillery’s products. Current

The style and tasting profile of the whiskies

The tasting profile is characterized by specific names such as Rye whiskey, Atlantic Aged Bourbon, and Honey Whiskey, but also by more playful expressions like mangogin, the westcoast variant, and Salt Karamel moonshine. This points to a range where there is both focus on sweetness, fruit, and more classic whisky references. The picture is not a heavy smoke or sherry profile, but rather a broad, audience-friendly expression with clear flavor markers and a playful style.

Philosophy and craft

Knaplunds’ own line is clear: “booze to the people”. They describe their gin, whiskey, and moonshine as something that should make people smile, lower their shoulders, and become a bit happier. At the same time, they emphasize a twist and a smile in the corner of your eye—both in the products and in the way they meet guests.
