Yamaga Distillery
About the distillery (briefly)
Yamaga Distillery is located in Kumamoto in the historic town of Yamaga, where a strong local culture, high humidity, large temperature swings, and deep groundwater provide the setting for a modern Japanese whisky distillery. Here, the team works intentionally toward a style that should be beautiful, elegant, and full of depth—and which has already led to both news releases and the first real single malt.
History
In March 2013, Yamaga Distillery Co., Ltd. was established. The distillery itself was completed in November 2021 in the town of Yamaga, and shortly after, on November 10, 2021, whisky production began. On April 16, 2022, the distillery’s visitor facilities and shop opened to the public, and the same year saw the first New Born release, YAMAGA NEW BORN 2022. In the following years, the house developed its lineup with more New Born releases, and in October 2025, the first single malt, YAMAGA The First, was released. In 2026, YAMAGA Peated — 2026 Edition followed, the distillery’s first peated single malt. Throughout this process, the story has been closely tied to Yamaga’s landscape, its craft traditions, and the ambition to create whisky with both grace and strength.
Raw materials and production
What drives production in Yamaga is above all the place itself. The distillery points to the excellent deep groundwater from the Kunimi Mountains and the Kikuchi river system, as well as a climate marked by large seasonal shifts—from winter cold to summer warmth, with high humidity throughout. This is an environment considered suitable for both whisky production and maturation. The descriptions emphasize Yamaga’s local history and culture, including Yamaga Lantern Dance, as an aesthetic and spiritual foundation for the whisky. The specific process is only partially described on the website pages, so the classic details about mashing, fermentation, and stills are not laid out here. In return, it is clear that the distillery works with both unpeated and peated expressions and uses different cask combinations in the documented releases, including bourbon barrels and sherry butt. The products are intended to express a house style in which fruit, creamy sweetness, and elegance are central signposts.
Maturation and cask types
Maturation is documented primarily around bourbon casks and, in a newer release, also sherry butt. YAMAGA NEW BORN 2022 matured in bourbon barrels for 5–7 months, YAMAGA NEW BORN 2023 in bourbon casks for 14–20 months, and YAMAGA NEW BORN 2024 was made from spirit matured for 25–31 months in a bourbon barrel and sherry butt. The relatively short maturation time in the early releases clearly marks them as younger expressions, while the combination of bourbon and sherry in 2024 points toward more layered fruit and sweetness. For the peated 2026 release, no specific casks are mentioned in the product text, but the flavor is described as having a light smoky finish and a softer, sweeter profile.
Whiskies
The range is built around the distillery’s first generations of young make and the first actual single malts. The early New Born releases show a development from the first, very young bourbon cask maturation in 2022 to greater complexity and peated nuances in 2023, and a broader cask combination in 2024. With YAMAGA The First, the distillery’s first single malt arrives, shaped around elegance as well as a fruity and creamy character. The subsequent YAMAGA Peated — 2026 Edition adds a smoky trail to the house style, while keeping the focus on fruit, soft sweetness, and a clean, harmonious profile. Taken together, the range paints a picture of a distillery building its identity gradually, letting the early releases serve as milestones.

The style and flavor profile of the whiskies
Yamaga’s style clearly revolves around fruit, creamy sweetness, and elegant pastry notes. In the documented releases, aromas such as vanilla, caramel, apple compote, pear compote, jam, and apricot recur, while the flavor also draws on financier, chocolate, butterscotch, and honey-like impressions. In the peated version, a gentle smoke and a hint of peat come through more clearly, but without overpowering the fruity, dessert-like core. The overall impression is of a whisky where sweetness, ripe fruit, and a light smoky balance carry the identity.
Visiting the distillery
The distillery is open to visitors with both tour options, a shop, and paid guided tours. Monthly opening-time information for the visitor facilities and shop is published continuously, and messages are also sent about temporary closures and special tour conditions. There is a reservation service for events such as the paid guided experience, and it is clear that visits require planning. A café or restaurant is not part of the offering, but the site functions as an active visitor destination where you can combine a shop, a tour, and tastings.

Philosophy and craftsmanship
Yamaga operates based on a clear idea of letting the place shape the whisky. Local culture, especially Yamaga Lantern Dance, and the town’s historic environment are used as a foundation for style and identity. The goal is consistently described as a whisky with a beautiful, elegant appearance, but also with depth and inner strength. At the same time, a persistent and purposeful approach to craftsmanship is highlighted, where they want to create something that is distinctively Yamaga’s while also exciting an international audience.
