Glenmorangie
About the distillery
Glenmorangie is located in Tain in the Scottish Highlands and is one of the most recognizable names in single malt whisky. The distillery was founded in 1843 and is closely tied to its local history and to the distinctive, tall stills that give the spirit its light and elegant style. Today, the range spans from the classic The Original to prestige bottlings and experimental limited editions.
History
The story begins in 1843, when the farmer William Matheson and his wife Anne set out to build a distillery in the Scottish Highlands. At first, the whisky was sold for a few shillings per gallon, but the project was intended to be bigger than the modest start. The name Glenmorangie is Gaelic and means “Valley of Tranquility,” and the connection to Ross-shire has become part of the place’s identity.
In the 20th century, Gordon L. Smart left a clear mark. He was appointed manager in 1920 after his father Alexander and remained in the role for fifty years. Together with the long-serving employees, the famous “16 Men of Tain,” he helped keep a rare strong craft environment alive. Today, the tradition continues with the “24 Distillers of Tain” under Edward Thom, who in 2022 was named Global Distillery Manager of the Year at Whisky Magazine Icons of Whisky Awards. It’s a story of continuity, local belonging, and a lasting ambition to make whisky with character.
Ingredients and production
Glenmorangie works in the Scottish Highlands and highlights its special connection to the landscape around Tain and Ross-shire. The distillery uses its distinctive giraffe high stills, which are an important part of the light and delicate spirit associated with the house. The specific production description is not detailed, but the official story emphasizes curiosity, quality, and a craft culture in which people and experience play a central role. The so-called Distillers of Tain are highlighted as carriers of the long, practical whisky-making craft.
Maturation and cask types
Maturation clearly shows Glenmorangie’s penchant for playing with cask types. The Tokyo is based on a combination of bourbon casks, sherry casks, and Mizunara oak, while Calvados Cask Finish is finished in Calvados du Pays d’Auge casks. Cognac Cask Finish is a small-batch release that comes from one of Dr. Bill’s rare experiments with Cognac casks. The range also includes a number of other finishes and prestige bottlings, showing a clear interest in using wood and previously used contents as flavor tools.
Whiskies
The core range includes the well-known expressions The Original, Triple Cask Reserve, The Lasanta, The Quinta Ruban, and The Nectar. In addition, there are prestige releases such as Signet, Signet Reserve, 19 Years Old, 25 Years Old, and Grand Vintage vintages, while limited editions such as A Tale of Spices, A Tale of Ice Cream, A Tale of Tokyo, A Tale of the Forest, and the Harrison Ford Limited Edition give the series a more playful and experimental side. The portfolio therefore ranges from accessible everyday whisky to very rare and expensive bottlings.

The style and flavor profile of the whiskies
Glenmorangie’s style revolves around light fruit, florals, and spice. The Original is described as soft and rounded, 19 Years Old as characterized by lively citrus notes and an intense creamy texture, while A Tale of Tokyo adds pepper, bitter cherry, and orange zest to the picture. A Tale of Spices clearly leans toward rose, jasmine, lilac, ginger, black pepper, and demerara sugar, and Calvados Cask Finish brings together baked apples, pears, vanilla, and floral notes. Overall, it points to a whisky that is often perfumed, fruit-driven, and spiced rather than heavy and smoky.
