About the distillery
The Glendronach is a Highland single malt distillery in Valley of Forgue, founded in 1826 and known for its deep, sherry-driven style. Here, Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso casks are not decoration, but the very backbone of the house’s identity. The range spans dependable flagship releases, rare special bottlings, and very old archive whiskies that show how far this style can be pushed.
History
The story begins in 1771 with Boynsmill House by the River Burn, but as whisky history it really gains momentum in 1826, when James Allardice gets one of Scotland’s first distillation licenses and establishes The Glendronach together with an association of local farmers. In the following years, the distillery changes hands several times: to Walter Scott in 1830, to Captain Charles Grant in 1920, and later to William Teacher & Sons in 1960, which expands from two to four stills. In 1976, Allied Distillers takes over, and in 1996 the distillery becomes wind-milled. After six years of inactivity, production returns in 2002. Under Chivas Brothers, it shifts from coal to steam heating in 2005, and in 2008 The BenRiach Distilling Company Ltd. arrives. In 2009, the 12-, 15- and 18-year expressions are launched as flagships, and in 2016 Brown-Forman buys the distillery and appoints Rachel Barrie as master blender. In 2024, growing global demand is marked with a new bottle design and a 200-year celebration that culminates in a 56-year anniversary release.
Raw materials and production
The Glendronach works as a Highland single malt distillery with a focus on sherry casks and maturation in traditional dunnage warehouses. The ongoing maturation is carried out in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso casks from Andalucía, and several releases also use Amontillado, Port, or special combinations of casks. Production is characterized by hand-picked casks, and in the older and more exclusive releases, each cask is selected with care so the final blend retains the full, sherry-driven house style. The distillery has also changed its heating from coal to steam, underscoring continued development without letting go of the classic maturation profile. In the most exclusive bottles, natural color, hand numbering, and wax sealing are part of the expression.
Maturation and cask types
Maturation is the distillery’s great signature. Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso dominate, and the Spanish casks come from Andalucía and the Jerez area, where some releases are also described as matured in Spain’s best oak from bodegas in Jerez. Several whiskies rest in dunnage warehouses for decades, and the rarest releases show how time can move a whisky from dark fruits and nuts to an almost monumental depth. The 56-year edition began in Oloroso sherry butts in 1968 and was moved in 2014 to Pedro Ximénez hogsheads, giving a clear picture that Glendronach uses both time and cask changes as a deliberate part of its maturation.
Whiskies
The core range consists of 12, 15, and 18 years, which together showcase the house’s sherry-focused signature across different ages and intensities. In addition, there are longer-matured expressions such as 21, 30, and 40 years in the flagship series, while Special Releases cover very rare bottles such as 50 and 56 years. The archive contains earlier and historical releases, including the Grandeur series, and Travel Exclusives gives travelers access to special bottlings such as 10 and 16 years. Common to all of them is a deep, dark, and often highly concentrated style, where sherry, fruit, and cask character lead the way.

Whisky style and tasting profile
Glendronach’s profile revolves around dark fruits such as cherry, plum, sultanas, and morello, often lifted by orange, quince, and bramble. In addition, there’s a clear sweetness with toffee, praline, muscovado, and honey, which makes the palate full and creamy. The third clear axis is spice and cask depth: ginger, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, walnut, cedar, and sherry give the whiskies their dark, dry, and complex finish.
