Wannborga
About the distillery
Wannborga is located in Övra Vannborga on Mellersta Öland, close to Köpingsvik and about a mile north of Borgholm. Here, distilling, a former vineyard, and rural living come together in a small Öland radby with animals around the houses. The distillery became known for its early whisky production and for a specially designed copper still, which has made it possible to develop many different distillates.
History
The farm has roots in agriculture from the mid-1980s, when it was run with sheep farming. When commercial cultivation of grapes became possible in Sweden in 1999, the idea of having its own vineyard on Öland grew, and in 2002 the first vines were planted. Three years later came the first grape harvest, and in 2006 a specially designed distillation apparatus was installed. The following year, the first whisky was produced, and it was described as the first Swedish whisky after Mackmyra. In 2012, Wannborga was named Sweden’s best vineyard, and that same year the distillery received international attention for both vodka and gin. Since the autumn of 2016, Camilla Skogsberg and Jan Suominen have run the farm. In 2025, the land with the vine rows was sold, and wine production was phased out.
Raw materials and production
The production is based on a specially designed distillation apparatus from Kothe Industri. It is a copper pot still with a onion-shaped dome, four bottoms, and a capacity of 150 liters, and it is built with advanced electronic setting options, so the master distiller can control and develop the spirit. The distillery states that it can be used for many types of distillate with good results. The first distillates were made from press residues from the wine production, and later other fruit distillates were added as well. Whisky production is part of a broader distillery, where the distillates come from the farm’s own raw materials and experience from winemaking.
Maturation and cask types
Some of the early distillates, including grape digestif and grappa, were laid down in casks. This shows that aging has been used as a deliberate tool to give selected distillates more depth and a smoother finish. The source material does not provide more details about cask types or longer maturation periods, but cask maturation is clearly a part of the distillery’s work with its spirits.
Whiskies
Wannborga’s current focus is on gin and whisky, while other varieties are produced on a very small scale as profile products. The whisky story begins with the first whisky from 2007, and the site also states that both wine and distillate were previously part of the whole. After the end of wine production, the distillate portion is what has carried the brand forward. The range therefore appears small, but with a clear farm and distillate profile rather than a broad commercial whisky selection.

Visit the distillery
Access to the site is through overnight stays, but there are no guided tours or tastings in 2026, and the restaurant is not open this season. Accommodations are offered in two villas and a one-room apartment (enrumslägenhet) in Övra Vannborga, with self-catering, check-in from 15:00 and check-out no later than 11:00. Booking is done directly via info@wannborga.se, and the site is located in rural surroundings close to a cycle path, Köpingsvik, and Lundegårds camping.

Philosophy and craftsmanship
Wannborga works with a specially designed distillation apparatus that provides great control over the development of the spirit. In recent years, the focus has been on gin and whisky, while other products are only produced on a very small scale as profile products. At the same time, the site has chosen to sell its beverages via Systembolaget and not offer on-site farm sales of alcohol.
