About the distillery

Vattudalen Whisky is located in Äspnäs by Strömsund in northern Jämtland and is run as a family-owned distillery with the wilderness right around the corner. From here come small Swedish releases, where rye, smoke, and different cask types play the leading roles. It’s a place for whisky lovers who are interested in limited releases, a clear grain character, and Scandinavian-influenced maturation.

History

Vattudalen Whisky lists 2015 as the distillery’s starting year, and since then the company has built its profile around family-owned work in norra Jämtland. The first clear whisky traces in the material appear in 2019, when Rye Whiskey was launched in 400 numbered bottles through Systembolaget’s web launch. The following year saw a single cask release of the same rye whisky, filled into a cask in March 2016 and bottled in October 2020. In 2024 came Single Malt Whisky - Sauternes 2016 as a web launch, and in 2025 the third release in the Gamlin series, Vildmark, was put on the market. The development shows a distillery working in small batches and building its identity around both rye-based whiskies and more experimental cask combinations.

Ingredients and production

The production is clearly centered on grain and especially rye. Several releases are made from a blend of 70 percent rye and 30 percent grain malt or barley, while others use smoked malt at 50 ppm. The material also mentions whisky distilled from grain, but without a full technical description of mashing, fermentation, or the distillation apparatus. Therefore, the most notable aspects are the choice of ingredients and the way Vattudalen connects the grain profile with smoky expressions and small batches. In addition, a consistent use of numbered bottles is seen, along with individual releases that are bottled without additives or coloring.

Maturation and cask types

The maturation spans several distinct cask profiles. Roogalator is matured in new American oak, while Vattudalen Rye Whiskey is matured in charred new American oak barrels. Vildmark is matured in three different types of casks: Swedish oak, smoked Islay casks, and sherry casks, and it has been aged from 2017 to 2025. Other releases also mention ex-bourbon barrels and a Sauternes reference, which emphasizes that the distillery works with both classic and more distinctive maturation styles.

Whiskies

The range goes from rye whisky to single malt and limited series such as the Gamlin series. The rye whiskies give a clear picture of the house’s grain focus, while Vildmark shows a more smoky and layered side of the production. Single Malt Whisky - Sauternes 2016 adds a more fruit-forward expression to the lineup, and together the releases form a range that is small, distinctive, and closely tied to different cask choices. It’s not a broad range, but a limited selection of bottles where each release carries its own clear idea.

Style and tasting profile of the whiskies

Across the releases there’s a thread of smoke, grain, and wood. Vildmark is described as smoky, nuanced, and full of character, pointing to a whisky expression with both depth and balance. The rye whiskies highlight rye’s distinctive grain profile and a dry, spicy sensation, while the Sauternes edition adds a more fruity direction. At the same time, new American oak, Swedish oak, and sherry casks provide a clear touch of wood that ties the styles together.

Visit the distillery

The distillery has a contact address in Äspnäs by Strömsund, so it is a specific place you can reach out to. The material does not provide a full visit description with opening hours, guided tours, or tastings, but it clearly shows where the distillery belongs. For visitors, it’s above all a small northern Swedish/Swedish production site with direct contact to the company.

Philosophy and craft

Vattudalen Whisky works with a family-driven structure, small and limited releases, and a clear grounding in the nature around Ströms Vattudal. The philosophy is also reflected in the choice of rye, smoke, and different cask types, where each release gets its own identity. In the Gamlin series, the whisky is also connected with original label artwork, which underlines an interest in both craft and visual storytelling.
