About the distillery

Länna Bruk Dryckeshandel is located just outside Uppsala, where history meets contemporary beverage production. The site calls itself Uppsala’s only urban winery, but the range goes beyond wine to include gin, rum, liqueur, grape spirit, and beer. What’s especially interesting here is the connection between an old-use site (bruksområde) and a small, craft-driven production, where local references and classic styles come together in the same building.

History

1760 – Roots in Länna Bruk’s history

The story of the site goes back to the 1760s, and for more than 200 years, Länna Bruk has been a place where generations of workers have come and gone. The area has had several lives: first with a blast furnace, and later as a sawmill, before it is used today for beverage production.

A new phase as an urban winery

Today, the site is run as a living winery and beverage producer outside Uppsala. The focus is on carrying forward the historical setting, while also creating a new story for the place through wine, spirits, and beer.

Ingredients and production

Production spans several categories, but the craft is described concretely in the individual products. The wines come, among other things, from grapes grown at a vineyard in Greece, which are harvested by hand in autumn and cooled during transport to the facility in Länna. Johanna ferments with the grapes for four weeks without pressing and then ages them for 12 months in new and used oak barrels. The white wine Harry and Robert are aged on stainless steel tanks, while Johan is an oak-aged grape spirit, distilled twice in a pot still. The gin is made as a London Dry in small batches, with a clear juniper profile, and the “vit rom” is produced by fermenting, distilling, and bottling on site from molasses. The beers are built on malt made from grain, wheat, oats, and pilsner malt, and several are hopped with American hops to give fruity, modern expressions.

Aging and types of barrels

Aging plays a clear role in the house’s wine and spirits work. Johanna receives 12 months in new and used oak barrels, and Direktören blends different vintages of Johanna, which then get longer aging on oak casks. The white wines Harry and Robert are aged in stainless steel tanks, preserving a cleaner, fresher expression. Across the products, aging is therefore used both to build structure, to unify vintages, and to guide development in flavor and texture.

Whiskies

The range is broad, but it has a clear local character. The wines Johanna, Direktören, Robert, and Harry show the house’s work with grapes and barrel aging, while Länna Bruk Dry Gin and vit rom stand for the distilled part. In addition, there is Kaffelikör and the grape spirit Johan, both of which underscore the more experimental side of the production. The beer selection includes, among others, Luthagen, Länna Bruk IPA, Länna Bruk Folk-IPA, Uppsala Nya Lager, Uppsala Nya Folklager, Fålhagen, and Svartbäcken. The whole is a portfolio that moves from classic beverages to more modern, easy-drinking expressions.

General flavor profile

The range goes from fruity grape spirits and wines to gin with a clear juniper profile, notes of citrus and floral tones, as well as beer with hop-driven fruitiness and bitterness from low to moderate.

fruitiness is described as Pear, citrus, exotic fruit, mango, passion fruit, and grapefruit, which recur in several products. malt/sweetness is described as Grain and oat malt, which give a crisp and light malty profile in several beers. vanilla is described as A light vanilla note is mentioned in the coffee liqueur. oak is described as Oak casks are used for longer aging of wine, which provides maturation and flavor development. floral is described as Layering, fruitiness, and freshness recur in both gin and wine, and Johan is described with clear notes of elderflower.

Philosophy and craft

Länna Bruk works from a clear idea of combining tradition with something new. They emphasize the history of the site and ensuring that Uppsala and Länna Bruk’s heritage comes through in the products. At the same time, there is a clear craft approach with small batches, a local feel, and a willingness to experiment—such as when the coffee liqueur was created through several rounds of testing with coffee and barrels.
