About the distillery

Gripsholm Distillery is located in Åkers Styckebruk in Sweden, built on a site with an unusually long history connected to iron, weapons casting, and spirits. The modern distillery was erected in 2007 and is today certified organic. For whisky lovers, it is especially interesting as a Swedish distillery that combines historical weight with hydropower and wind power, as well as its own well water supply.

History

The site’s history begins in 1580, when King Charles IX of Sweden established the Åkers Cannon Foundry in the area, after local iron deposits made it valuable. Shortly after, a distillery was also set up on the site, so that vodka could be delivered to foundry workers and the surrounding population. In the 1700s, Joachim Daniel Wahrendorff, who owned the Åkers Cannon Foundry, founded Gripsholm Distillery and named it after Gripsholm Castle nearby. The distillery later grew to become the largest in Sweden, but a state monopoly on alcohol production in the 20th century led to its closure. Later, the monopoly rules were loosened, and in 2007 Gripsholm Distillery was erected again on the same historic grounds.

Ingredients and production

Gripsholm Distillery works with a clearly documented organic profile and is certified according to both the EU’s and USDA NOP’s standards. The production uses a natural yeast strain in fermentation, the water is sourced from the distillery’s own well, and the facility is powered by electricity generated from hydropower and wind power. These are concrete choices pointing toward a production focused on clean raw-material processing and a close connection to the site. More detailed information about mashing, distillation, and the facility’s setup is not provided in the material here, so the key image is of a distillery that prioritizes organic practices, its own water source, and a simple, nature-based approach to fermentation.

Visit the distillery

Gripsholm Distillery is not generally open to visitors. There is no information about tours, tastings, opening hours, or booking, so the experience here is primarily about the distillery’s history and production rather than a comprehensive visitor program.

Philosophy and craft

The distillery’s profile is built around organic certification, its own well, natural yeast, and the use of renewable energy from water and wind. This provides a clear picture of a facility where the craft is tied to concrete, measurable choices in production. The approach is simple and consistent: focus on ingredients, energy, and certified processes rather than polished storytelling.
