Tullamore D.E.W.
About the distillery
Tullamore D.E.W. is an Irish whiskey brand based in Tullamore in County Offaly, where it is produced at a purpose-built distillery in Clonminch. Here you meet one of Ireland’s most famous whiskey names in a working facility, built on triple distillation, triple cask influence, and a clear connection to the town and its community.
History
Tullamore D.E.W.’s history begins in 1829, when the distillery was established in Tullamore. The name is taken directly from the town, and the whiskey’s identity is therefore closely woven together with the place where it is made. A central figure is Daniel E. Williams, who started at the distillery as a stable boy at the age of 15 and later became Distillery Manager at the age of 25. His initials live on in the name D.E.W., and he is associated with the brand’s development as well as with the prosperity that the whiskey brought to County Offaly and the Midlands. The brand also highlights proud local culture, where strong roots and community are part of the identity, and where the slogan Be More Tullamore brings the story together. At the same time, the Irish spelling of whiskey with an e plays a role in the story; in 1878 it was used to mark the difference from Scotch whisky. That makes Tullamore D.E.W. more than just a name on a bottle: it’s a story of a town, a family, and a style that has survived since the 19th century.
Ingredients and production
The production is based on malted barley. The barley is soaked in water so it begins to sprout, and sprouting is stopped by removing the grain from the water. The malted barley is milled and mashed with warm water to form a sweet liquid, which is fermented with yeast into wash. The wash is distilled in copper pot stills, normally two or three times, after which the spirit is filled into wooden casks, typically oak, where it is aged for at least three years before it can be called whiskey. Tullamore D.E.W. describes its style as triple-distilled, triple-cask-finished, and triple-blended, and it is precisely the combination of these approaches that gives the house its distinctive character. Source material also points to local ingredients and a production that is rooted in the Irish landscape and in the town of Tullamore.
Maturation and cask types
Maturation takes place in wooden casks, normally oak, and the storage lasts at least three years. The triple-cask-finished style suggests that multiple cask influences contribute to the finished expression, without providing further details about specific casks. The visitor experience further underlines the cask’s role, because guests can taste whiskey directly from casks in the Secret Warehouse Snug. This creates an image of a maturation philosophy where classic cask aging and active use of the cask as a flavor reference go hand in hand.
General flavor profile
The whiskey is described as smooth and delicious, with a soft and easy-to-drink style.

Philosophy and craftsmanship
The brand’s values are gathered in the words Be More Tullamore: strong roots, community, and pride in the hometown. Daniel E. Williams is associated with vision, commitment, and a deep dedication to the craft, and his quote that success comes to those who care deeply about what they create fits well with the brand’s self-understanding. The Irish wolfhound symbol also underscores loyalty, kindness, and determination in the pursuit of high-quality whiskey.
