Historie

Bourbon County Revival: Whisky has been distilled in Bourbon County since before 1785; Bourbon County is the birthplace of Bourbon Whiskey. After Prohibition in 1920, all 26 distilleries closed, and no bourbon was produced for 95 years. Hartfield & Co Distillery was founded by Andrew Buchanan and Curtis Mackley to revive the industry in its birthplace; the first legally distilled bourbon from Bourbon County was produced on October 7, 2014. The distillery is named after the ancestors Isaac and Leopold Hartfield, who operated Hartfield Distillery in Green County until a fire destroyed it in 1870. Master Distiller Jeremy Buchanan is a direct descendant of Isaac Hartfield.

The history continues with developments and phases: in 2015 the distillery was renamed Hartfield & Co Distillery to honor the ancestors; the distillery grew to its current location in Paris, Kentucky; in 2016 family members joined the company, and actress Kayley Cuoco became a silent partner. Hartfield & Co joined the Kentucky Distiller's Association and became a stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. During the pandemic in 2020 the company also focused on hand sanitizer production. In 2021 Hartfield & Co launched the Kentucky Spirits Limited line of bourbon and rye whiskeys and began holding virtual tastings. In October 2021 Jeremy Buchanan took over as Master Distiller and President, and in 2023 they released Old Bourbon County as their first Straight Bourbon Whisky, followed by Hartfield Family Reserve – 9 Year in October 2024. Hartfield continues to make history by bringing bourbon back to Bourbon County.

Origin and lineage: Jeremy Buchanan is a direct descendant of Isaac Hartfield, and the distillery is named in honor of Isaac and Leopold Hartfield, who ran Hartfield Distillery in Green County from 1865 to 1870.

Philosophy and goals: Hartfield & Co is driven by the desire to bring people together around craft beverages and revive the rich heritage of distilling in Bourbon County. They emphasize high quality, local farming and limestone water, and preserving the history behind the region.
