Ardnamurchan Distillery is located on the western highland coast of Scotland in Acharacle, surrounded by a raw and maritime landscape. The distillery was established in 2014 and produces single malt whisky that is matured on the peninsula. Here, traditional double distillation meets peated and unpeated spirit, along with a clear interest in both classic craftsmanship and modern technology.

History

Ardnamurchan Distillery was established in 2014 on the Ardnamurchan peninsula, a place that is itself part of the identity. The distillery’s name refers to the westernmost mainland point in Scotland, and the story is closely tied to the harsh coastline and the long maritime history of the area. An important local landmark is Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, built in 1849 and ever since helping ships stay safe along the west coast. The lighthouse’s coordinates are incorporated into the label’s logo as a direct reference to the location. Today, the distillery stands as a newer Scottish single malt house, where the spirit is both made and matured on the peninsula.

Raw materials and production

Ardnamurchan works with malt spirit and makes two basic types: peated and unpeated. The peated spirit is specified at 30 PPM phenols, which gives the whisky a gentle smoky character, and the distillery has also produced a heavily peated version at 80 PPM, which is still maturing. Production is based on traditional double distillation, and the distillery uses modern technology such as blockchain as part of its work. The focus is on flexibility in the blending team, so different expressions can be created from the same distilled base. At the same time, maturation is anchored in the distillery’s own warehouses on the peninsula, which ties production closely to the coastal environment and the local climate.

Maturation and cask types

Maturation takes place primarily in a combination of American and European oak casks, especially ex-bourbon and ex-sherry. In addition, there are more experimental casks that previously held white wine, Mezcal, Sauternes, and Madeira. This provides a wide range of maturation possibilities, from the more classic bourbon and sherry profile to more distinctive expressions. The distillery itself states that it also plays with other types of oak casks, emphasizing a maturation style where base and curiosity go hand in hand.

The featured range spans Ardnamurchan’s own AD releases to Maclean’s Nose. Among the single malt expressions are AD / SINGLE MALT, AD / CASK STRENGTH RELEASE, AD/ SINGLE CASK, and AD/ SHERRY CASK RELEASE, while Maclean’s Nose is a blended Scotch Whisky with a clear West Coast character. Altogether, the lineup forms a program where the classic malt expressions stand alongside a more powerful cask-strength edition, a rarer single cask, and a sherry-oriented release.

The whisky style and flavor profile

Ardnamurchan’s whisky profile moves between fruitiness, sweetness, smoke, and coastal seasoning. In one whisky, you’ll find orchard fruit, honey, and marzipan, while another points toward coastal peat smoke, vanilla, and warm black pepper spice. The sherry expression instead draws on dried fruits, spices, and a hint of maritime peat. Together, they paint a picture of a style where the fruit is clearly present, the sweetness is noticeable, and the maritime smoke always forms a consistent part of the house’s signature.

The distillery welcomes visitors, and there is a shop on site. You’re also encouraged to book a tour, so guests can get closer to the way whisky is made. The opening hours are listed as Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 16:30, offering good opportunities to visit during the week or at the weekend.
