Norrtälje Bränneri
About the distillery
Norrtälje Bränneri is located in the countryside in Roslagen, about an hour north of Stockholm, and is one of Sweden’s early small-scale craft distilleries. The distillery is run on a family farm, where the production is intertwined with the farm’s history, and with a clear focus on Sweden’s drink heritage, locally sourced ingredients, and small batches in copper stills.
History
Norrtälje Bränneri was founded in 2001 by Kristina and Richard Anerfält-Jansson, when they took over the family farm, which had been in the family’s ownership for five generations. The actual production is housed in a barn built in 1904 and later converted into a distillery. From there, one of Sweden’s first small-scale craft distilleries grew, with the ambition to work closely with fruit, berries, and the local farm tradition. In 2025, the distillery launched a limited batch of Roslagspunsch Hallon with raspberries from Uppsala, and in 2026 summer opening is planned with guided tours, farm shop sales, and tastings. It also marks that Richard Jansson has passed away, underscoring how personal and family-rooted the place is.
Ingredients and production
The production is based on locally sourced and organic ingredients, and the distillery particularly highlights the work with fruit and berries. Distillation takes place in copper stills, and each step in the process is described as small batches, from selected ingredients to distillation, blending, and bottling. The water used for dilution comes from the distillery’s own well, and it is a clear part of the house’s identity that they work on the farm and in the barn—converted into production. This gives the work a craft character, where ingredient choices and the physical setting are closely connected to the finished expression.
Whiskies
The available material shows a range spanning from classic distillates to more experimental fruit and berry expressions. There is a clear emphasis on small batches and season-based releases, and the portfolio tasting brings together six samples from the house. At the same time, the distillery also works with farm shop sales and special visitor experiences, so the portfolio is not only about the bottles, but also about tasting them in the context they were created in.

Philosophy and craft
The distillery’s work is rooted in Sweden’s drink heritage, and the stated approach is to use locally sourced and organic ingredients in small batches. It is a house that connects family history, the farm, and craft, and that emphasizes making everything—from ingredient selection to bottling—part of the same story about what they themselves call their Swedish drink heritage.
