About the distillery

Kingsbarns Distillery is located near St Andrews in Fife and calls itself The Single Malt of St Andrews. It is a family-owned place that houses a distillery, visitor centre, café and shop, and that has made a name for itself with Lowland single malts, ranging from light and fruity expressions to more sherry-influenced and smoky bottlings. Visitors can get right up close to the production and taste the distillery’s flagships on site.

History

The story begins in 2013, when renovation of the old farmstead at Kingsbarns got underway. Here, they chose to preserve and restore the site rather than replace it, and the oldest part, the Doocot, became a central symbol of the distillery’s identity. In March 2015, the first cask arrived in the Doocot, marking the start of the whisky that would later become the distillery’s first release. In 2018, Dream to Dram was released as the first whisky, and it quickly drew attention for its light and fruity style. In 2020, it was named World’s Best Lowlands Single Malt at the World Whisky Awards. Since then, the story has been expanded with the Doocot as a new flagship whisky in 2023, and with Coaltown as the third expression in the core range—showing that the Lowland style can also carry a discreet smoky profile.

Ingredients and production

Kingsbarns works with local ingredients, and both locally grown barley and water from its own spring are mentioned as the foundation for the spirit. The distillery’s style is described as light, elegant, fruity and floral, and emphasis is placed on a long fermentation as well as a relatively high cut point, so the new make retains its lightness. Maturation is clearly guided by the balance between spirit and wood: the core style uses especially ex-bourbon barrels and STR casks, while Balcomie is matured in sherry butts, and several limited editions and single casks reveal other sides of the house. Coaltown is created in ex-peated casks, where the idea is to add a soft smoke without losing the distillery’s fruity Lowland character. Several bottlings are non-chill filtered and with natural colour, underscoring craftsmanship that stays close to the raw ingredient and the cask.

Maturation and cask types

Maturation ranges from ex-bourbon and STR to ex-Oloroso sherry butts and ex-peated casks. Balcomie is stored in 100% ex-Oloroso American Oak Sherry Butts, while Doocot is based on a combination of ex-bourbon and STR ex-Portuguese red wine barriques. Distillery Reserve 2024 is the distillery’s most mature whisky to date and is matured in six American Oak Sherry Butts, chosen for their fruity and complex character. The single cask releases also show the range: a 6-year-old sherry butt, a 6-year-old ex-peated cask, and a 10-year-old golf release in ex-Oloroso American Oak Sherry Butt. Overall, the material points to a distillery that actively uses the casks to shape style and balance rather than to hide the spirit.

Whiskies

The core range consists of Balcomie, Doocot and Coaltown. Balcomie is the sherry-driven, light and balanced side of the house, Doocot represents the flagship with longer maturation and more depth, and Coaltown adds a gently smoked variant to the range. In addition, there are limited editions such as Distillery Reserve 2024 and special releases with a golf- or membership-profile, while the single cask releases make it possible to follow the distillery’s style in a more concentrated form. The whole is a Lowland portfolio, where fruit, florality, sherry and discreet smoke are the guiding notes.

Whisky style and tasting profile

Kingsbarns’ consistent style is characterised by fruit, sweetness and floral notes. Across the range, pineapple, orange peel, dried apricot, pear and summer berries appear again and again, and the sweetness often comes through as treacle, brown sugar, soft caramel or buttercream. Another clear direction is the discreet smoke in Coaltown and the ex-peated single casks, where sweet smoke, campfire smoke and delicate peat smoke work together with the fruity character. At the same time, sherry and wood maturation add notes of cinnamon spice, baking spice, toasted oak, cedar wood chips and roasted hazelnut, which lift several releases from pure fruitiness to more depth and complex Lowland whisky.

Visit the distillery

Kingsbarns is open to the public, and the distillery is open 7 days a week. Here you can book distillery tours, whisky experiences, gin experiences and private events, and both guided tastings and a café and shop setting are offered on site. The café is open Monday to Sunday from 9:30 to 16:30, and the shop Monday to Sunday from 9:30 to 17:00. The visit is set up so that guests get an expert guide with coverage of the production, before tasting the distillery’s flagships.

Philosophy and craft

The distillery works from a clear balance between spirit and cask, and several places highlight that cask influence should complement the whisky rather than overpower it. Emphasis is placed on local ingredients, on a light and elegant Lowland style and on independence as a family-owned business. At the same time, small batch sizes, limited editions and experimental casks are used as a tool to develop new expressions without letting go of the house style.
