History
Auchentoshan began in 1817, when John Bulloch bought the Auchentoshan estate and established the Duntocher distillery as a creative way to avoid tax collection. In 1823, the distillery received its legal license, and in 1834 it was sold to John Hart and Alexander Filshie, who gave it the name Auchentoshan. After a period under C.H. Curtis and Co Ltd., the Maclachlan brothers George and John arrived in 1878 and created 57 years of stability and success. During the Second World War, a German bombing raid hit hard, destroying a warehouse and stopping production, but already in 1948 the whisky was back in the pipeline. Later came ownership under J&R Tennent, Eddie Cairns Ltd. and Stanley P. Morrison, before Suntory took over in 1994 and the period became associated with many prestigious awards. In 2025, Auchentoshan received a new visual expression intended to be modern while still staying true to its roots.
Raw materials and production
Auchentoshan works with malted barley, which is lightly kilned and completely free of peat. The grain is milled to fit the lauter tun, and the mash is introduced at 63.5°C, where the starch is converted into sugar and produces a clear wort. After two mashes, you’re ready for fermentation, while the third mash is used as the first water in the next mash. The distillery’s hallmark is the consistent triple distillation, where every single drop of spirit is distilled three times, and the spirit is lifted from around 8% ABV to 81%. This helps bring out fruity and citrus notes in the distillate, while the whisky also becomes particularly receptive to the influence of the cask. That’s why cask selection matters a great deal, and it’s clear that they work deliberately with the balance needed to bind spirit and wood together.
Maturation and cask types
Maturation takes place in oak casks, with bourbon, sherry and fine wine as the starting point. The distillery places emphasis on choosing the right casks and balancing their individual contributions. It’s a maturation where the wood isn’t just meant to store the whisky, but to provide color and flavor over time. The combination of triple-distilled spirit and different casks is a central part of the house style.
